Megan Garvin and Erika Potts battle for a rebound in Thursday’s game.

Even though the Lady Dinos went into Thursday’s game against Emery saying they had nothing to lose, they knew they were playing for pride and a shot at first place in the region. But despite their best efforts, they went down hard to a good Emery team. The final score of 40-60 reflects the strength and intensity that the Spartans brought to the match-up.
Both teams came out hard. In a flurry of scoring, the game stayed pretty evenly matched until the end of the first quarter. The Spartans got their press game going and again the Dinos struggled to get the ball into their own end of the court. With the game being called tightly by the officials, the Dinos began to get a little tentative about going inside and settled for some outside shots.
By the third period of play, Emery began pulling away. They kept up the press and were able to get easy baskets off of Dino turnovers. Carbon was able to get their offense going again in the fourth and outscored Emery 20-18, but by then the damage was done. It was an emotional loss for the Dinos after having so many close wins.
Megan Garvin hit three threes on the night as she led the teams scoring with 13. She managed to yank in six rebounds as well. Julia Potts was able to add 10 points to the total.
Coach Carlson was a bit disappointed, but she also gave credit to Emery, “They are a good team and came up here and played well. They have a great press and we handled it in the first quarter, but we really struggled after that.”
The girls have one more region game before they begin the first round of the playoffs. On Tuesday they travel north to Juan Diego. They handily beat them the first time they met. They will get a bit of time to work on things and regroup before taking on the third seed from region 11 in a home game on Friday, Feb 16th. As it stands now that team will be either Tooele or Grantsville.
