Digging themselves out of a hole seems to be a pattern for the Carbon girl’s basketball squad this year. The game in Delta had the girls doing more of the same. Carbon and Delta sported identical 8-4 records going into the Thursday night match up and only one team could come out on top.
Delta was figured to have a bit of an edge in the match up due to a home court advantage, but it was the Dinos who proved to be the better team as they scored a 32-26 victory over the Rabbits.
The first quarter of play was pretty evenly matched as the Rabbits edged out the Dinos by one. The Rabbits left Carbon with a six point deficit going into the break after a small scoring run at the end of the half.
It was the Dino defense that took over in the third as they held Delta to two points the entire quarter. Making a locker room adjustment of the defense they were running, the Dinos literally shut down Deltas scoring. Carbon put up nine to take a one point lead into the final period of play. The D again was the key as Delta could only manage another two points while the Dinos added another seven to finish off the game.
Leading the way again for the Dinos was Julia Potts with nine points. Patricia Smith had eight; Ericka Potts added seven and Megan Garvin stuck in six. Patricia Smith hit two from the outside with a pair of three point shots. Julia Potts had five steals on the night. Garvin blocked two shots against some considerably taller opponents. Garvin and Julia Potts also played the boards for a combined 12 rebounds.
The game was not without its down sides. By the end of the evening three Dinos had made a visit to the emergency room. Samantha Smith took a shot to the head in the JV game and ended up with stitches and a swollen face. She was unable to play in the varsity game. Kayla Nammany dislocated her shoulder again and this time it may be more serious. One other Carbon player went to the hospital showing symptoms of appendicitis. The drive home was a nightmare as well, with blizzard conditions and an overheating bus making the trip home a real adventure.
Next week’s schedule will have Carbon facing off with North Sanpete in a home game on Tuesday night. “We can’t take any team lightly,” commented Coach Carlson, “every team coming to town wants to beat Carbon.”
On Thursday, the girls will travel down into Emery for a tough match up. Emery has a strong team again this year and the cross county rivalry only intensifies the battle. Game time for both games is at 7:00 p.m.
