Pre-conference play is a time for the players to learn the ropes and the plays before heading into the games that count. During a tournament at Twin Falls, Idaho this weekend the CEU women’s basketball team was reminded about something else as well. Even though the team lost two out of three games, they came away with a greater appreciation of life and how fast it can change.
The College of Southern Idaho hosted the tournament in Twin Falls, Idaho.
The first game between them and the Sheridan, Wyoming Generals was a fundraising event for former basketball player Lindsey Heimkes. She has a spinal cord injury that has left her with the use of her left hand only. This was the result of a one car rollover this summer.
College of Eastern Utah Coach Dave Paur and his team were greatly moved by the community effort to assist Heimkes and her family. “Basketball is only a small part of one’s life, but a community coming together for one of their own is special.” Paur remarked after the game.
CEU did get a chance to shine as they bested Sheridan 68-59 in their first game of the tournament. Haley Rogers put up 18 points on the night leading the Eagles to victory Thursday.
On Friday CEU faced off with Central Arizona College. Staci Little and Jenny Fisco combined for 25 points to lead CEU, but it wasn’t enough. CAC scored 25 points off of CEU turnovers and went on to win 82-55.
In the final game Casper, Wyo. was the foe and had a 37-33 lead by half time. They went on to take the game 81-63. Halee Rasmussen was 2-5 from the three point line.
CEU will continue pre-conference play with another road trip. They will play a pair of games in Glendale, Ariz. before coming home for their first game on the friendly floor of the BDAC on Nov. 27 against Treasure Valley Community College.
