The Utah Commission on Volunteers received Citizen Corps grant funding of $238,000, for the establishment of new councils.
The funds were received through the Utah Department of Public Safety, Division of Emergency Services and Homeland Security as pass-through funding from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
The U.S. Homeland Security grants program awarded $1.7 billion to states, territories, and urban areas to enhance capabilities to prevent, protect against, respond to, and recover from terrorist attacks, major disasters, and emergencies, pointed out the state commission.
Citizen Corps is a White House initiative that engages residents in ensuring that their communities are safer, stronger and better prepared for disasters, continued the Utah commission.
In Utah, more than 30 state, regional and local Citizen Corps councils have been established to encourage personal responsibility for preparedness, training and volunteering through programs such as CERT, Neighborhood Watch, Medical Reserve Corps, Volunteers in Police Service and Fire Corps, explained the commission.
Grant applications for funding of new and existing Citizen Corps councils must be submitted by Aug. 1.
