go West brings back the All on the Same Page Community Book Club

It seems that so many people like to read that a program that was presented in Carbon School District last year will be here again this March.
Back by popular demand, the district and its sponsors will again host All On the Same Page – Community Book Club.
“The purpose of community book club is to have many people in the community, young and old, read the same book and gather together to discuss common ideas and concerns,” said Kristen Taylor, the programs coordinator.
All On the Same Page -Community Book Club is now in its second season. Recently this program was selected by the Utah Humanities council to receive a Utah Humanities Council 2006 Humanities Award. The honor is in recognition of the contribution the project made to the advancement of the humanities in people’s daily lives, especially in the areas of literature and literacy.
The award was presented to Kristen Taylor and Norma Procarione, Price City Library Director on Feb. 1 before state legislators at the capitol.
This year’s community book club theme is Books Go West. The reading selection is New Found Land by Allan Wolf which explores the diversity of the people and crew of the Lewis and Clark expedition and is told in free verse poetry.
This book has won numerous awards including the School Library Journal Best Book of 2004, the American Library Association 2005 Best Book for Young Adults, and the International Reading Association Children’s Book Award Notable.
“I am absolutely thrilled that Allan Wolf, the author will actually be here on March 21 to participate in our book club event,” said Taylor.
Allan Wolf was the national director of Poetry Alive, a national endowment program, for nearly 10 years. He will perform at the community book club and participate in small group discussions with community members and students.
The books are now available at the libraries.
Community book club participants can enjoy a western community supper, hear Allan Wolf discuss the diversity of the members of the Lewis and Clark expedition and participate in group discussions of the book,. They can also enjoy a reader’s theatre excerpt of the book performed by Mont Harmon Jr. High School students, stroll through an art exhibit by poster artist Sandy Wisecup, view the entries for the student art contest and much more. Interested community members can pick up a complete schedule at the Price City Library or at Carbon District school libraries.
A new addition to this year’s event is the Workshop Wall. Funded by sponsors, community members and students (grades seven and above) can register to attend these free, corresponding workshops.
“This year there will be four workshops offered in conjunction with our community book club,” said Taylor. “Community members and interested students will have an opportunity to write about, paint or photograph the western landscape. All workshops are free to the public but have limited enrollment so early registration is recommended,”
Projects created at the workshops will also be displayed at the book club event.
