The ADA Support Group received the Mayor’s Choice trophy for their entry in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade when 30 wheelchairs and scooters along with family members and friends showed up to promote the ADA Sidewalk Project.
The ADA Sidewalk Project, Sponsored by Active Re-Entry and the Community Resource Action Committee, an Americorps VISTA project, has helped those in our community who use wheelchairs and scooters find a voice and make a difference in their own lives as well as the lives of other citizens of the Carbon County area.
Currently wheelchairs and scooters are having to use the roadways to get around town because many sidewalks are not accessible due to lack of curb cuts and damage to curb cuts and sidewalks. Price City, Carbon County and UDOT are all working diligently with the Project to help make the city safer for the disabled of our community so they can access business medical buildings and public facilities. Many repairs have already been made.
The North side of Main Street has been sanded down so they can use the sidewalk from 3rd East through the downtown area. The curb cut behind Smith’s Parking lot was replaced to allow better access. A section in front of Walkers on Carbon Ave. was repaired to allow wheelchairs and scooters to stay on the sidewalk and off the busy bypass entrance. On Main St. between 2nd and 3rd W. a section near the jail was torn out and rebuilt. Other changes are still in the planning stage.
Plans have been approved to change the intersection at 100 North and 6th West to include a pedestrian vehicle lane so scooters and wheelchairs can get through the intersection without being in the lanes of traffic. Sidewalks will soon go all the way to the hospital and Westwood Subdivision and will be ADA accessible. In addition, Carbon County will be putting a pedestrian pathway along Carbonville Road beginning in 2005 and completing in 2006.
Active Re-Entry, through it’s VISTA Project helped establish the support group for Price citizens who utilize wheelchairs and scooters. It is their hope that those who use pedestrian vehicles can assist each other in learning safer practices while riding wheelchairs and scooters and aid in making travel throughout Price City safer for themselves. The Support Group began meeting last fall and have since established a Buddy System to pair new and timid users with those who have experience and know the safest routes through town.
The group is determined to help anyone who needs and wants help find the safest way to get around.
