The Carbon Dinos must have quite a name in Colorado, because almost every year they travel to Montrose for a preseason tournament and often dominate it.
In this years edition, they didn’t win every game, but they did win against some tough teams from the Denver area and returned with two wins to one loss. On Friday the defeated second ranked (in 5A) Northridge 11-7. Then on Saturday they beat up Lakewood, another Denver team, 20-3.
Sandwiched in between was a game against Silver Creek which ended in a 8-7 loss.
“We played well in all the games, except that we got sloppy against Silver Creek and lost by committing too many errors,” said Coach Lane Herrick on Monday.
Against Northridge Brandon Wilson pitched and the team batted well according to Herrick. It was a great start to a long weekend.
But that afternoon, with Derek Anderson pitching, what Herrick termed as “defensive inconsistency” set in and the game went down the tube because of it.
Finally, fired up by their mistakes on Saturday, the batters took it out on Lakewood. Chris Hatch pitched a good game and Chase Julian relieved him.
The team now opens Region 8 league play with a game this afternoon (Tuesday) on the Dino field against Emery at 3:30 p.m.
