It’s been some time since Carbon’s boys basketball team was able to go into the Spartan Center in Castle Dale and come away with a victory.
Any chance of that sooner than next season is now gone again, as the Dinos lost to the Spartans 50-39 on Friday night.
While the boys teams always seem very competitive and ready to face a season with great goals, certainly one of those beating Emery, it seems somewhere things just go south on them. Either Emery shoots a little better, rebounds a little better or gets the better shots. Whatever it is it seems as of late the Spartans have Carbons number.
In the game on Friday it was obviously hard for Carbon to score. At 39 points it was one of their lowest offensive games of the season and they only had one player, Tyler Nelson with 13, score in double figures.
That scoring drought showed up as soon as the game started as the Spartans were off and running up the score. At the end of the first period the big board in the Spartan Center said 18-8 and in the second quarter the hole got deeper for the Dinos as the home team took them down another 6 points, with a half time reading of 28-12.
As often is the case, Carbon had dug themselves a hole to climb out of, one that, despite a much better second half, they couldn’t climb out of.
Carbon played better defense in the second half holding the Spartans to just 11 points in the third quarter, They also equaled that point total as well, but that did them little good considering how far behind they were when they began the half.
But hope springs eternal and Carbon got new hope as they started to work their offense in the fourth quarter. They out scored the Emery kids 16-11 in the fourth; better, but not enough.
While there wasn’t a lot of high scoring for Carbon there were a lot of contributors to the final tally. Chase Julian put in 8 points, while Cameron Oliver scored 6 and Schyler Nammany put up 5. Other scorers included Levi Branch with 3, Brandon Wilson with 2 and Miles Hunsaker and Jeremy Barker with 1 point each.
Carbon now stands at 1-4 in Region 8 and will face Delta Friday night at home at home.
