Carbon found it’s first varsity basketball victory of the year and it was in an unlikely place.

The boys from Carbon have not been too successful in their visits to Vernal over the years. Uintah High School has almost always seemed to have their number.”
But not this year, because the numbers came from four contributors who were on the Carbon squad.
The Dinos had four players in double figures and beat up on the Utes 66-57. On the way evened their preseason record to 1-1.
Carbon’s hustle and enthusiasm that was displayed in last weeks loss to Tooele was still evident, but the turnovers were largely reduced, They needed that advantage against this team, because Uintah’s big star this year is Jake Gardiner, who in this game not only put up a big 34 points but pulled down 20 rebounds, an amazing amount for any high school player to pull off the glass.
Carbon began early and well taking a 15-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
However, the Utes looked better in the second quarter almost evening things up in the scoring department for the period. At the half the Dinos still led however, 29-25.
In the third quarter it looked like the Carbon kids were going to run away with it as they blasted the home team with 20 points to their 11 for the period.
But then came the fourth quarter and Gardiner’s big numbers and dominance on the boards had the Dinos running just bit on edge. Uintah put up 21 points in the quarter and held the Dinos to 14, but it wasn’t enough.
Carbon was led in scoring by Miles Hunsaker with 17 points, while Tyler Nelson added 14 and Chase Julian put up 13. The other Dino in double figures was Schyler Namanny with 10.
Carbon now goes to the Ben Lomand High School Tournament in Ogden Friday and Saturday where they will play two more games that count in the preseason.
Then they will play at Grantsville, one of the newer entries into the 3A ranks on Dec. 8.
Their next home game will be on Dec. 10 when Canyon View from Cedar City comes to Price.
