100% For Kids Credit Union Education Foundation awarded $5,075 to Helper Junior High for advanced calculators on Nov. 19.
The grant will allow the school to purchase new graphing calculators that will be used for pre-algebra, algebra, geometry and algebra II. Each student will be provided with a functional calculator that has an appropriate application to teach the core mathematical concepts.
“When each student has their own personal calculator in the classroom, they will be able to perform the experiments and handle all kinds of data and equations that will help them discover different mathematical principles,” said John DeSandre, a math teacher at Helper Junior High. “The new calculators will be able to process information that will help the students’ ability to learn.”
Helper Junior High will purchase 70 TI-84 Plus Silver Edition calculators that are inexpensive and that possess a large amount of software that includes the programs necessary to fulfill the core requirements in each math class.
“The credit unions are excited to support the need for technologically advanced materials,” said Utah Senator Paula Julander, director of the 100% For Kids Foundation. “It is crucial that our future leaders have the proper education and tools to advance in this fast-paced and technology-driven society.”
100% For Kids Foundation will award $88,000 total, reaching more than 45 Utah classrooms this quarter; not one cent is spent on administrative costs.
