Last week some long lines formed around the Southeastern Utah District Health Department for those who wanted flu shots. The district is located at 28 South 100 East in Price and they have scheduled another flu clinic for Thursday, Nov. 4, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or until the vaccine is gone. Vaccine is for and will be given to high risk clients only. Lines form early for the vaccine and during the Oct. 21 clinic the rain was falling so heavily that officials tried to move it to an area where people could wait in a dry area, but those in line were so worried about getting their shots that they didn’t want to move. That round of vaccinations was held at Community Nursing and rather than just give 50 shots they ended up administering 200. The shortage this year is due to contamination found during tests on vaccine being manufactured by Chiron, a British company. Although they found that the contamination was only present in about four and a half million doses, all 46 million doses the company had manufactured were held up for further investigation. Not long after the Federal Drug Administration started the inquiry they decided that using the rest of the vaccine would be unwise, so it was taken out of circulation too. The discovery of the contamination was not discovered until August so having other companies manufacture enough in time was impossible, although more has been ordered for later this year.
