Diverse Helper team represents all of Carbon County

By Sun Advocate

The Helper major league all-stars qualified to represent the Carbon County Western Boys Baseball Association at the “Little World Series” in Rigby, Idaho with astounding back-to-back wins over Northern Heights on July 22 and 23.
Homeruns by Damian Olsen and Clint Finkbiner and the phenomenal pitching of Joseph Lopez and Johnathann Garcia made all the difference in the 4-1 and 5-2 victories.
With players of all nationalities and backgrounds filling out the all-star team, assistant coach Fred Olsen said the group is a good representation of the diversity of Carbon County.
“We’ve got a little bit of everything,” he commented.
The team arrived at the tournament fields on Monday, where they participated in a variety of individual skill competitions. Competition included a home-run derby, base running and throwing accuracy. The team also enjoyed an opening night barbecue with the other participating teams.
The team will begin pool play today at 3 p.m. in the 12-team tournament. After today’s, Wednesday’s and Thursday’s pool play, the top four teams will advance to the semifinals on Friday while all other teams play in the consolation bracket.
Head coach Willie Ellington said he is extremely proud of the players.
“They’ve all played really hard and they deserve what they got,” he pointed out.
Ellington said he expects good things from his pitching staff, who can all “throw a pork chop past a wolf”.
