Letter to the Editor: Ask elected officials to rectify injustices

By Sun Advocate

Editor:
The United States of America is the most powerful and prosperous nation on earth. Our government thinks nothing of spending hundreds of billions of dollars on waging war, and helping other nations, yet shows no empathy towards over a million of our retired veterans who fought in previous wars and conflicts.
On June 2, 2003, the United States Supreme Court rejected to hear our case about “promised” health care involving former career military men and women who served during World War II and Korea. It was unconscionable that our highest court could not step forward and deal with this gross injustice. The Supreme Court said only Congress could rectify this problem.
This year is a Presidential and Congressional election year. The incumbents are already on their stumps telling us the great job they are doing, or will do, for our country. They have no hesitancy of telling half truths while demeaning the service and character of those who ensured their right to do so. Those seeking office are telling America that they have the magic that will be a cure all for all of America’s ills. And you know, unfortunately, the American public will believe them.
After careful study of all the issues, confront the candidates for public office and get a firm commitment, not just a “promise,” that they will rectify this injustice to our older retired military veterans. After you are satisfied, then make sure you are registered to vote, and then vote your conscience.
