In weekend basketball action, the College of Eastern Utah Eagles weren’t feeling any love after a Valentine’s Day trampling by the College of Southern Idaho Golden Eagles.
Both the mens and womens teams returned home winless from Twin Falls, Idaho, each losing both nights of the two game series.
In the womens games, CEU had the opportunity to replace CSI at the top of the Scenic West Athletic Conference standings.
The CEU Lady Eagles needed to take both games in order to claim the best record in the league.
But, poor shooting from the field and the free throw line squelched Eastern Utah’s chances of taking the conference title.
The Lady Eagles went 5-12 from the free throw line in Friday’s game and shot 18 of 68 from the floor to Southern Idaho’s 30 of 64.
CSI took an easy victory, 69-48.
On Saturday, the team could not regain shooting composure and again struggled to make baskets.
The Lady Eagles missed 12 of 17 free throws and fell to Southern Idaho 63-70.
“We picked the worst possible time to have a bad shooting night,” head coach Dave Paur commented.
CEU’s drops to 16-6 with the losses.
Southern Idaho is assured first place in the division with an 18-2 record.
The Lady Eagles will host Salt Lake Community College on Feb. 27 and 28 in the last regular season game of the year.
SLCC is currently the third ranked team in the SWAC.
On the mens side, CEU dropped below 500 with the losses, while Southern Idaho assumed a share in the first position in the conference.
CSI, SLCC and Snow College are currently tied for first place in the SWAC with a 13-7 record.
CEU’s 10-12 record places the team sixth out of the seven conference teams.
In Friday’s game, Southern Idaho handed CEU a 93-67 loss.
Eastern Utah gave a more convincing fight on Saturday night, trailing at the half by two.
Southern Idaho fought to the finish and recorded a 75-70 win.
CEU’s mens team will finish the 2003-2004 regular season with SLCC at home.
The mens games begin at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 27 and 28 and are preceeded by the womens games at 5:30 p.m.
