When the timing system for the Desert Wave Pool went bad, Carbon High head swimming coach Phyllis Cox made the arrangements to rent two back-up consoles.
Carbon was scheduled to host the region swim meet this year and a facility without timing systems would have been disasterous.
What Cox didn’t plan for was receiving two unusable consoles and having to cancel the first day of competition, anyway.
The two rented consoles arrived without the neccessary powercords needed to operate the machines.
Luckily, Delta High’s swim coach was able to get family members to drive a cord to Provo and save what could have been a doomed meet.
Things went a lot more smoothly on Saturday and the meet commenced without any more major complications.
Carbon’s boys team took third place out of the four competing teams with a score of 182.
The Lady Dinos took fourth place with score of 111.
First or second place finishes qualified individual swimmers for a spot at the state tournament, while a first place relay finish qualified relayers.
Chase Norton qualified for state with a second place finish in the 100 yard freestyle and a second place finish in the 200 yard freestyle.
Leonard Bradlee, a junior, qualified with a second place finish in the 500 yard freestyle and freshman Chris Eikenbary’s second place in the 100 yard breaststroke secured a slot at the tournament.
Swimmers are only allowed to compete in two events at the state tournament, which will take place at Brigham Young University.
As a result, many more swimmers will qualify for the year-end tournament.
A final list of the qualifying participants will be released on Wednesday.
Cox said the team is currently trying to replace the defective timing system and is looking for community help to do so.
“If we would have had our own system instead of a borrowed one, we would not have to have had all the trouble and embarrassment,” Cox commented.
Region t-shirts and hoodies are still available for purchase and the team is asking for any donations to go toward the new equipment.
