Letter to the Editor: Takes issue with response

By Sun Advocate

Editor:
With all due respect to Walt Borla (Letters to the Editor, Cec. 23) if he will go back and read my letter and not just emote over it, he will find that my comparison was of the casualties we sustained in the pacification of Germany and Japan after VE and VJ days. Many veterans that were in the occupying forces in Japan and Germany after the WWI have related that they lost far more friends after the victory in Europe and in Japan than we are in Iraq now. I would never argue with them because my service was from 1967 to 1975 in fast attack nuclear submarines.
Mr. Borla also chooses to count Great Britain as our only ally when 63 nations joined us. Just because Germany, Russia, France, China and North Korea were afraid of a cruel dictator armed with their own weapons does not make the United Nations correct. The 12 years of sanctions simply allowed them to sell Saddam more armaments and palace accoutrements.
I am not sorry that the president landing on our aircraft carrier in a flight suit reminds him that both Bushs were military jet pilots while Albert Gore was only allowed to handle a typewriter for the military. Maybe he has confused the landing on the carrier with Clinton finding the only white rocks in view on that sandy Normandy Beach and then Clinton making a cross with himself silhouetted against the warships in the Channel.
Our military did not tear up Iraq. Saddam Hussein allowed Iraq’s infrastructure to collapse and his people starve. He bought weapons from the above nations and build grandiose palaces to hide in .
I would also point out that our highways are supposed to be maintained by the Federal Highway Trust Fund not out of general funds. This trust fund has not been fully expended for years. Most of the money in it has simply been held as a balance against the debt. I also see nothing in the Constitution that says the federal government should be building any hospitals. In fact it shouldn’t be, except for the military and the Veterans Administration. I hope those hospitals are what Mr. Borla means because otherwise he’s created another new entitlement?
I am sorry that Mr. Borla thinks Bush and Cheney were appointed. He should recall that Carbon County and Utah voters elected the five electors from Utah committed to the Bush and Cheney ticket. If that isn’t enough to calm his emotions, I suggest that he read No Ordinary Election that starts on page 12 of the May 2001 American Legion Magazine for the true story of what happened in Florida in the winter of 2000. Read the U.S. News and World Report or The Economist if they want to find out the truth. Newsweek and Time have become nothing but house organs for the “I hate Bush and Cheney and to hell with the truth” journalists.
