Members of the Carbon volleyball team that competed in the St. George tournament this summer display their trophy. According to coach Bruce Bean, the volleyball team is expected to be state title contenders again this year.

The Carbon High girls volleyball and basketball teams have made quite a name for themselves across the state in recent years. With several trips to the state finals in both sports, the Lady Dinos have turned fans and critics heads for years.
This year should be no different. According to coach, Bruce Bean, both the volleyball and basketball teams are expected to be strong once again this year due in part to the ladies hard work and determination.
“We have competed in several summer camps this year and have done quite well. In volleyball, I think we will be a state championship contender. We have several return players and their skills are excellent,” explained the coach.
Recently, members of last year’s volleyball team competed in a camp in St. George. Approximately 15 teams competed in the event with the Carbon varsity team finishing in second place and the JV team placed first.
The volleyball athletes then moved on to compete in an open court tourney at Thanksgiving Point where the team entered as first seed. Once again, approximately 15 teams participated from across several western states and the Carbon JV team finished in fourth place in the varsity division.
Although volleyball will be the girls sport of choice to kick off the fall sports season, the basketball team prepares for their upcoming year which will begin in late November.
Carbon recently competed in a St. George tourney which attracted approximately 25 teams from across the western states.
Once again, Carbon came out strong and finished in fourth place at the varsity level.
“We have several girls in both sports that are expected to return this year. These girls have been dedicated to Dino sports and have worked hard all summer to improve their skills. I expect that both the basketball and volleyball teams will make it to state,” concluded Bean.
Tryouts for this year’s volleyball team will kick off August 11, 9 a.m. at Carbon High.
Students entering ninth through 12th grades are encouraged to attend and may contact coach Bean at 637-5403 for more information.
