FERRON – After a long and painful illness due to age complications, our sweet mom, Ellner Thompson Brereton, passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2003, under the excellent care of Emery County Nursing Home staff.
In 1918, Ellner was born to Maude and Thomas Thompson in Ferron. She and her brother, Preston, and sister, Nola, had a fun, but typical childhood milking cows, helping in the field and wading in the Molen Ditch.
When the CCC boys came to the area, she met and married Marvin Brereton of Provo. Over the course of a nine-year period, they had three children, lived in many places due to Marv’s employment on the road construction, but they always came back to Ferron. In 1976, Marv died of a sudden heart attack. Later on, Ellner met and married Elmer (Tug) Jones of Orem. They purchased a home in St. George, enjoyed a life of travel and a wonderful companionship for the next 13 years. Tug passed away in 1989. Ellner came back to Ferron to live in the Emery County Nursing Home until her death.
Ellner loved traveling, her family and friends, and playing cards. She was an excellent card player.
Ellner was always described as the “sweetest and most classy lady.” She took great pride in how she looked, her beautiful hair and wearing her favorite color, red.
She was adored by her nieces and nephews, always being a favorite aunt.
As a young woman, she dreamed of becoming a journalist as she had a strong and creative writing ability. However, being from a poor family and being a girl, she never realized that dream.
