Babe Ruth team competes at state

By Sun Advocate

Regional baseball play proved to be successful for two Carbon Babe Ruth teams earlier this month.
During a region tournament conducted in Vernal, three teams from Carbon County competed for the district title.
In the 13 year old league, the Carbon Allstar team successfully defeated Vernal 12-2. By winning the first round game, Carbon moved on the following day to compete against Roosevelt.
Once again, the Carbon team played well and defeated their opponent. The 15-5 victory for the Castle Valley team moved them into the final round of region action.
In the final round, Carbon faced Vernal for the second time and once again defeated the home squad by the final, 11-7. The win sent the Carbon team to the state finals in Gunnison which proved to be a little tougher than the region tourney.
Carbon opened up the state finals against Richfield and suffered their first loss in the double elimination tourney by the final, 5-4.
After a close opening game, the Carbon Allstars felt that they could come back and defeat Gunnison in the next round of baseball action.
Unfortunately, Gunnison shut out Carbon 15-8 which sent the team home without a state title.
Also competing in the region Babe Ruth tournament in Vernal was the 14-year old Carbon Allstar team who also had a successfully showing.
Carbon opened up the tourney against Roosevelt. The local Allstar squad had a strong showing and defeated Roosevelt, 9-2 and advanced to the second round of action.
The next game enabled Carbon to catch an easy victory as they defeated Vernal, 17-1. This win would advanced Carbon to the championship game.
Carbon started the final game a little shaky but by the end, the team had regrouped and captured the 13-3 victory.
The win came after the Carbon Allstars banned together and played strong as a team. With great performances by each member, Carbon advanced to the state tourney in West Valley.
This week, the Carbon team has been competing in the state tourney and had not lost a game as of Tuesday afternoon.
The Allstars were scheduled to compete against Taylorsville, July 23. This is the same team that the Carbon club competed against last season for the championship. Carbon ended up losing to Taylorsville by one run in the bottom of the seventh.
Also competing in the region tourney in Vernal was the Carbon Allstar team comprised of 15 year olds.
Carbon opened the tourney strong by defeating Vernal 7-6, but then the Allstars suffered back to back losses which knocked them out of the state finals.
