Letter to the Editor: Think of those who want to know

By Sun Advocate

I wonder as I write this letter, if those who have had loved ones that has left this frail existence and passed beyond the vale have considered how they tell others of the tragedy. I wonder if they understand that by only submitting their obituary notice in the local papers the deep the sorrow and disappointment it causes many of us, “Old over homers” that have left the Carbon and Emery County area when we read in the Emery County Progress or Sun Advocate the passing on of someone we held in high regard. Then we read of their funeral services that has taken place a week before.
An “Old over homer” are people such as myself, born and who spent their youth in Huntington, chasing girls throughout Emery County and working in the coal mines until the outbreak of World War II. Later I settled down and lived 40 years of my life in Carbon County before going south into retirement. In both areas I made friends that I held dear and in high regards.
In many a case had I known in advance, I would have gladly driven from St George to come back home and pay my respect to them and their family, had I known of deaths earlier than I did.
It’s a simple matter of running a few words about a person’s death in the state wide dailies, to let those of who care and have moved away know what has happened.
Even a photo is not necessary.
