Time is running out for Carbon and Emery county high school seniors to dial into Emery Telcom’s 2003 student scholarships. The telecommunications company is accepting scholarship award applications through April 25 for Emery County, and May 9 for Carbon County.
“The scholarship money gave me a leg up,” said Chris Meyers of Huntington. “it really helped with buying books and covering all the unexpected costs that come with starting a college career.” Meyers received a $1,000 scholarship award last year and is currently attending the College of Eastern Utah.
“We want to help ensure the continuing viability of our local communities,” said Greg Killpack, general manager of Emery Telcom. “I can’t think of a better way to invest in the communities’ future than to provide the leaders of tomorrow a better chance to further their education and pursue a successful career.”
This year, Emery Telcom will give 11 scholarships to deserving students in Carbon and Emery Counties. Seven seniors from Emery County High School, one from Green River High School, two from Carbon High School and one from East Carbon High School will each receive an award of $1,000.
To qualify, graduating seniors will be required to provide proof of acceptance into a two- or four-year college, university, or state certified trade or technical school. Students must have a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher, and must complete an essay as specified in the scholarship application found at any high school or Emery Telcom office located in Carbon or Emery County
Emery Telcom established the scholarship fund in 1998 as part of its Education Initiative to support local students. Since then, Emery Telcom’s education initiative has contributed as much as $40,000 per year to benefit local schools and students through a variety of programs. Other programs include academic excellence awards, positive action, general sponsorship as well as advertising and promotional support.
