The Huntington/Eccles Canyons Scenic Byways Energy Loop is the place to go this year, according to Joan Taylor, coordinator of the Energy loop, which includes the Huntington and Eccles Canyons Scenic byways. It is located on SR-31 from Huntington to Fairview and SR 264/96 from Huntington Canyon to Colton.
According to Taylor, “not only is it one of the most beautiful byways in the state, but it is also the site of some exciting happenings throughout the year.”
On Feb. 22, the Scenic Byway was in the limelight when the winter photography class came on the scene. The instructor, Layne Miller, gave the students a mini photography course and then headed to the Byway to create photographs as beautiful as the canyon.
“There might have even been some wildlife shots, although no one is telling until they turn in their class photos for prizes,” says Taylor. The winners will be announced in mid-March.
The Manti-La Sal Forest is celebrating its 100th year this summer and there promises to be some exciting events between May and August. A peek at the events list reveals a reenactment of the merging of the two forests which created the Manti-LaSal Forest where the byway is located, games at the legendary Baseball Flats, tours of the historic Stuart Guard Station.
Taylor reminds people to mark their calendars for July 19 when the second annual triathlon and 5K and 10K walk/run are scheduled. The “Drop Dead Gorgeous” Olympic distance and sprint triathlon and biathlon will start at 6:30 a.m. at Scofield Reservoir.
According to Taylor, the excitement begins when the contestants leap into the mountain fresh coolness of the lake for the swim portion, then proceed to the biking session, finishing up with the sprint course. In the afternoon the action proceeds to the Stuart Guard Station in Huntington Canyon for the Energy Byway Scenic runaway. Contestants will be transported to Electric Lake area for the race which begins at 6 p.m., and finishes below the guard station.
