Local youth encouraged to participate in basketball competition. It is time again for the Utah Jazz and the NBA’s annual fun shot competition. The local event will take place Feb. 22 at Carbon High with registration beginning at noon. The competition is set to begin at 1 p.m.
The competition is free to any youth grades five to 12. Local winners will advance to an area competition and then area winners, by invitation will advance to the final competition held at the Delta Center.
Rules of the event will be simple. The game is played by one individual who has one minute to score as many baskets as possible from any of the five different shooting spots identified on the court.
Each shooting spot is worth a different point value ranging from two to five points. The point values will be marked on the shooting spots. The player with the highest score advances to the next level of play.
Players begin with the ball in hand at the free throw line. The game coordinator will signal when play is to begin.
Players must dribble from one shooting spot to another. One point will be deducted for each dribbling or motion violation.
A player can score up to two layups worth three points each during the one minute competition.
Shots from the free throw line are worth three points. A shot beyond the three point arc is worth five points.
Three other shooting spots will be located on the court and will vary in scoring value.
Any athletes interested in competing can come to the high school at noon this Saturday or register early at Carbon County Recreation.

College of Eastern Utah to host annual cheer and dance workshop. The College of Eastern Utah’s cheer squad is presenting a cheer and dance workshop for youth ages six to 16 years old on Saturday, Feb. 22 in the BDAC.
Each participant will receive a T-shirt and certificate at the conclusion of the day long workshop plus perform during the CEU men’s basketball game that evening.
Participants will learn cheers and chants, gymnastics and tumbling, stunts and pyramids, pom pom routines, band dances and funk dances.

High school students encouraged to participate in online contest. Utah high school students between the ages of 15 and 18 are encouraged to participate in an online interactive game event this Thursday.
By participating, students are eligible to win admission to a skeleton camp March 1 in Park City with Olympic gold medalist, Jim Shea.
Students can enter to win the camp visit through an interactive online game to be hosted Feb. 20 only. Participants can access the game anytime between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. this Thursday at the Internete site, www.zionsbank.com/jimsheagame.
Once there, students will be instructed to tap the computer mouse as quickly as possible once a series of lights turn green and before Shea jumps on his sled to race down the icy track.
The scores will be posted at the end of the run, allowing the students to compare their score to Shea’s Olympic gold medal run.
Students who participate in the online game will be entered into a drawing for the skeleton camp experience.
A total of 12 winners will be picked at random from among the entries. These winners will then attend the instructional camp at the Utah Olympic Park where they will meet Shea and take a skeleton ride on the actual Olympic track.
Winners of the contest will be notified Feb. 25.
