It was work day Saturday for several board members and volunteers of the Habitat for Humanities housing project. Volunteers from throughout Carbon and Emery counties, students from the CEU Sun Center and youth detention center participated. In Wellington, the group worked on a yard and house as they prepare to recycle the Habitat for Humanity Home, built by the group about three years ago. It was vacated recently, so now the group is preparing to get it back in shape and ready to resell.
“Its a helping hand up, not a hand out,” explained group chairperson, Sylvia Nelson as she explained that perspective home applicants must volunteer at least 20 hours before their applications are considered.
Another work session was held in Castle Dale where the habitat plans to begin construction of their second house in Emery County. The group there spent the day digging, raking and cleaning two lots getting ready to kick off the construction in the spring. It is located in valley subdivision.
In Wellington, board members and volunteers as well as a perspective home owner and her family spent several hours cleaning, raking, and repairing the home.
Habitat for Humanities is an international group established to eliminate poverty housing. Over 250,000 homes have been built outside the U.S. and over 100,000 have been construction in this country.
Habitat for Humanities of Castle Country is one of nine groups in Utah, comprised of members from Carbon and Emery counties.
Every house is construction by donated materials or money. This affiliate has built three homes in Carbon County and one in Emery County and is currently working on two more. Future plans call for a home in Green River and another in East Carbon. In addition, the group has assisted with four additional homes in Mexico.
