John O’Berto
WELLINGTON – Our loving husband, father and grandfather, John O’Berto, age 68, passed away Sept. 30, 2002 at the University of Utah Hospital.
He was born Jan. 19, 1934 in Helper to Tony and Martha Mar-chello O’Berto. Married Evelyn Varellas, later divorced. Married Janet Ericson Allred Aug. 17, 1984 in Huntington. Marriage later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple in September 1994.
Member of the LDS Church, where he was the high priest councilor in the Wellington 2nd Ward.
Lifelong resident of Carbon County and graduate of Carbon High School in 1952. Served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.
John worked as a produce manager at Safeway, Farmer Jacks and Stewart’s for 23 years. He also worked at Castleview Hospital in the operating room for five years and was co-owner and operator of J&J Cafe in Wellington since 1990.
John was an avid outdoors-man and he had a special love for fishing. He will be dearly missed by family and many dear friends.
Survived by his wife, Janet O’Berto, Wellington; brother, Tony and Lorna O’Berto, Helper; three sons and one daughter, Gary O’Berto, Nashville, Tenn.; Jackie and Scott VanRooy, Christiana, Tenn.; Brad Allred, Chad and Laura Lea Allred, both of Wellington; five grandchildren, Cylon Nielson, Ashley VanRooy, Garron Nielson, Shayann Allred, Abagail VanRooy. Preceded in death by parents and two sisters.
Funeral service Oct. 5, 11 a.m., Wellington LDS Stake Center. Family will be at Mitchell Funeral Home Friday evening, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and at the church Saturday one hour prior to services. Interment, Wellington City Cemetery.
Charles Jensen
HUNTINGTON – Charles LaVern Jensen, age 59, passed away Oct. 1, 2002 at home.
He was born Sept. 24, 1943 in Denver, Colo. to Walter K. and Tessie Alma Lee Knott Jensen. He married Velma Joy Kummer June 6, 1968 in Canyonville, Ore.
He loved to spoil his grandchildren rotten.
He enjoyed caring for his garden (where weeds feared to tread) and was the life of every party.
He always harbored a deep and abiding love for the outdoors, hunting, fishing or just passing the time with his family. His heart was always open to his family and anyone else who needed love and attention.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War as a combat engineer. As a member of the UMWA, he worked as an electrician, mechanic and face boss.
Charlie is survived by wife, Velma, Huntington; children, Christie and Wayne Maxfield, Castle Dale; Charles L. Jensen Jr., Salt Lake City; Tessie Lee Jensen, Price; Tami Lynn Lett and Collette Back, both of Salt Lake City; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; mother, Tessie A. Jensen, Lawrence; brother, Donald A. Jensen, Castle Dale; three sisters, Lorraine Tucker, Evelyn Nailon and Marrian Guhlke; and half-brother, Perry McArthur. Preceded in death by father, six brothers and one sister.
Charlie’s love, kindness and quick wit will be dearly missed by his family and many friends.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Oct. 5, 2 p.m., at the Huntington 1st/5th LDS Ward Chapel. Friends may call Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Fausett Mortuary in Castle Dale and one hour prior to services at the church. Burial, Huntington Cemetery.
Jessie Williams
PRICE – Our beloved Jessie Oviatt Williams, 93, passed away at her home in Price with the love of her family at her side on Sept. 30, 2002.
She was born in Cleveland to George T. and Yergena Nielsen Oviatt. She married Robert H. Williams in Price March 20, 1930. He passed away June 9, 1964.
Jessie grew up in Elmo and moved to Price in 1925, also living in the coal camps of Sweets and Standardville before settling in Price in 1941. But she always considered Elmo her home.
Jessie was very active throughout her life making many beautiful crocheted pieces, quilts and unique items involving rocks, shells and glass. She enjoyed genealogy and was active in the LDS Church for many years. She was a member of the Price 5th LDS Ward.
Survivors include her children, James D. Williams, Price; Boyd (Rosemary) Williams, Price; granddaughters, Leslie (Eddie) Roye, Price; Linda (Scott) Green, Farmington; great-grandchildren, Lindsay and Vance Rory and Travis Green; brother, George Travis Oviatt II, Joplin, Mo. She was preceded in death by parents; husband; infant son, Peter Williams; six brothers and five sisters; and great-grandson, Harley Green. She was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by family and friends.
A visitation will be Thursday, Oct. 3, 6 to 8 p.m., at Fausett Mortuary in Price. Funeral services will be Friday, Oct. 4, 11 a.m., at the LDS Chapel located at 545 E. 400 North, Price, with a viewing at the church that morning from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Interment will follow in the Price City Cemetery.
Fillie Sandoval
OGDEN-Fillie Vincent Sandoval, 80, left this earth on Sept. 30, 2002, to follow his lifelong love, Stella, who passed away Sept. 5, 2002.
He was born in Miami, N.M., on May 4,1922. Fillie was born to Erminda Sandoval Lopez and was raised by his grandparents, Juan Inocencio and Adela Lopez Sandoval and his aunts Amanda Sandoval, Aurora Pacheco, Auerlia Cordova and Cora Casias, whom he considered sisters
During his lifetime, he resided in Springer, N.M., Price and most recently, Ogden. He married Stella M. Sandoval on Feb. 26, 1941 in Springer, N.M., and was married for 61 and a half years.
This union was blessed with eight children, Gloria (Sam) Roy, Springer, N.M.; Edward F. (Marge) Sandoval and Samuel Sandoval, both of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Frederick J. (Marianna) Sandoval and Cynthia L. Sandoval, both of Belen, N.M.; Santiago C. (Elaine) Sandoval, Ogden; Catherine A. (Rudy Jr.) Ortega and Jack T. (Althea) Sandoval, both of Roy.
Fillie was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He had been a resident of Wasatch Care Center for the past three years.
Fillie served in the military during World War II as a rifleman. His service was performed in Central Europe, where he was awarded the Bronze Star for valor as well as the Combat Infantryman’s Badge and the Purple Heart for wounds received. He was also a prisoner of war during his service. He was honorably discharged on Jan. 27, 1946.
He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Patriotism and service to this country is the legacy he leaves his family.
He is survived by brothers Benjamin (Rafaelita) Lopez, Espanola, N.M.; Ernest (Gloria) Lopez, Dumas Texas; and sister Annie (Orville) Kear, Springer, N.M. He is also survived by all eight of his children, 19 special grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, whom he loved dearly.
Grandpa was very loving and playful with his grandkids. He taught us how to read, color, and sneak and hide all the goodies. He was also very fond of a special cousin, Emma Pacheco Hooker, who really did spoil him.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his mother, his grandparents, one brother, three aunts and two grandchildren.
The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to Rich Ulibarri and staffs at Wasatch Care Center and McKay Dee Hospital. They also wish to thank Dr. Robert Mohr, Dr. Brooks Watson and Dr. Michael Allred.
Services will be Thursday, Oct. 3, 10 a.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church under the direction of Leavitt’s Mortuary, Ogden. A vigil service was Wednesday. Interment, Leavitt’s Aultorest Memorial Park.
