When the bats for Carbon High’s baseball team finally woke up last weekend at the Montrose Colo. tournament, some feared it may only be the high mountain air that brought them alive.
But never fear; those bats came home and pounded Lehi 6-1 on Monday afternoon on the Dinofield, setting a precedent for the rest of the season.
Carbon, who continues to be ranked number one in the state in the 3A division this week took on the fifth ranked Pioneers and showed why they are the top ran ked team; the score may have been 6-1 but tweleve hits off of the Lehi bullpen showed why Carbon could very well repeat as champions this year.
Troy Grundy had another fine game for Carbon as he struck out 13 batters and in doing so made a mess of the highly rated Lehi batting order.
Once again this game started slow as both teams got a feel for each other. In the second inning Lehi got their only score of the game when AJ Guase, the Lehi pitcher in the game, hit a home run.
But after that Lehi was finished.
Carbon came out knocking out two runs in the bottom of the second, then scoring one in the third, two in the fifth and another just to round things out in the sixth.
It was a tremendous victory for the Dinos who were playing Lehi for the first time in Region eight play.
“Our whole team hit well,” said Coach Lane Herrick on Wednesday morning just before he was leaving for an afternoon game with North Sanpete. “And Grundy. He pitched a great game.”
In the hitting department Matt Jewkes had three hits with one RBI. He also scored two of the runs.
The Dinos next home game will be against Delta on Tuesday on the Dinofield.
