Jean Winters
PRICE – Jean Adele Winters, age 77, passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, in Bountiful.
Born Aug. 18, 1924 in Kansas City, Mo., to Herbert and Dora Thomson Parsons. Married Dr. Dean Gunn Winters Dec. 28, 1952 in Kansas City. He preceded her in death on June 14, 1975
Jean enjoyed many types of arts and crafts, including painting, knitting, quilting and embroidery. She was an avid bridge and pinochle player.
She was a devoted wife and mother. As an active member of the LDS Church, she served in various callings.
She is survived by her three sons, Wayne Winters and David Bair, Seattle, Wash.; Bill (Susan) Winters, Bountiful; John Winters, Soldotna, Alaska; grandchildren, Andrea and Michael of Bountiful; and brother, Wayne Parsons.
Funeral services were Monday, March 4, at the Price 5th LDS Ward Chapel. Burial was in the Price City Cemetery under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.
Jean McArthur
PRICE – Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Jean Afton Nielson McArthur, age 70, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002. Her courage, determination and faith in our Heavenly Father sustained her for many years as she endured many challenges with her health. She was surrounded by her loving family as she passed peacefully from this world.
Jean was born in Kenilworth, the oldest child of Robert and Anna Nielson. Jean and Perry Hampton McArthur were married in the Manti LDS Temple May 7, 1954 and enjoyed 47 years together.
She was raised in Huntingon amongst many cousins and dear friends, including her sweetheart, Hampton. She attended North Emery High School, Carbon College and BYU.
Her life was filled with service for her family, friends and faith. She served as a ward YWMIA president and in the stale YWMIA. She also served in the Primary and in many positions in Relief Society on the stake and ward level. She and Hampton served many years in the Manti LDS Temple, which was one of the great joys of her life.
She loved to sew, garden and decorate her home. She was an amazing quilter and loved to crochet. She made beautiful quilts for all of her grandchildren when they were born and later when they were married. She and Hampton loved the time they spent together making their yard a place of peace and beauty. She and Hampton raised their family in Price, living in the same house for 44 years. They had the opportunity to associate with many wonderful friends who have been a great support to them all through the years. Jean also loved to read, especially church literature and was always encouraging her grandchildren to read and get a good education.
She is survived by her husband, Perry Hampton McArthur; three children, Teresa (Gary) Deaton, Sandy; Diane (Cal) VanDyke, Orem; Mark (Jody) McArthur, Taylorsville; two sisters and two brothers, Eda Nielson, American Fork; Marilyn (Joseph) Wilcock, Murray; Robert W. (Mary) Nielson, Clairmont, Calif.; and James L. (Patti) Nielson, Scottsdale, Ariz. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services were Saturday, March 2, at the Price LDS 11th LDS Ward Chapel. Burial was in the Huntington City Cemetery under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.
Zeph Knighton
PRICE-Zephara William Knighton, age 41, passed away Feb. 26, 2002.
He was born Jan. 7,1961 in Salt Lake City to Jerrold William and Evelyn Hamblin Knighton. Married Karen Oberg, later divorced. Married Kelli Marie Turner March 28, 1994 in Lake Tahoe, Nev.
Zeph loved and lived for his home and family. Zeph had many wonderful talents. He was an artist, loved to work with his hands and was well-recognized for his mechanical and welding abilities. He enjoyed golfing, skiing and spending time with his children and special little dog, TIA. He enjoyed watching silly movies and he had a dry sense of humor.
Graduate of Carbon High School Class of 1979 and later attended the College of Eastern Utah. Zeph worked for Joy Mining & Machinery for 18 years and, for the past three years, he worked for DBT America, which he enjoyed very much.
Zeph’s greatest gift was that he had a loving heart and a gentle spirit. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Survived by wife, Kelli Knighton; son, Jake William Knighton; daughter, Tyler Marie Knighton, all of Price; son, Alexander Zephara Knighton, Gresham, Ore.; mother, Evelyn (John) Pfnister, Rupert, Idaho; sister, Annette (Stuart) Arnold, Kennewick, Wash.; brother, Tony (Kena) Knighton, Cedar City; sister, Vicky (Leandro) Castaneda, Kennewick, Wash.; sister, Melissa (D.J.) Blanton, Price; parents-in-law, Kent (Karyn) Gilbert, Price; brother-in-law, Victor Turner, Price. Zeph was preceded in death by his father.

John Spensko
HELPER- John Spensko, age 88, passed away Feb. 27, 2002 at St. Joseph Villa in Salt Lake City.
He was born June 27, 1913 in Sunnyside to Leopold and Annie Carban Spensko. Married Ann Slavensky Dec. 24, 1936 in Price and their marriage was later blessed at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Helper. Ann died on Jan. 28, 1996.
Member of the Catholic Church. John was a longtime resident of Carbon County, where he had a multitude of wonderful friends and family. He was a retired member of the UMWA Spring Canyon Local 1681 with 45 years of service.
John loved to play the harmonica, accordion, and had a special love for “Polka.” He was a past member of the Slovenian Lodge and Price Elks Lodge.
John enjoyed hunting and fishing and will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
For the past five and one-half years, Dad was a resident at the Golden Living Retirement Center, where he acquired a special talent for painting ceramics.
Dad was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. We love you and you will miss you and that familiar whistle

Marius Johnson
FERRON – Our beloved Marius (Merk) Jacob Johnson, age 93, passed away Feb. 27, 2002 in Ferron.
He was born June 5, 1908 in Lawrence to Jacob Baldwin and Petria Knudsen Johnson. He married Cleo E. McArthur July 15, 1939 in San Pedro, Calif.
Marius served in World War II in England and France. He bought a farm in Lawrence, where he and Cleo farmed and raised cattle. In 1996, they move to Huntington to be closer to a nephew and niece. Cleo passed away Feb. 3, 2001.
He was fun to be around and loved to play checkers with friends. He loved to rake leaves, grass and rocks into piles at his new home in Huntington.
He was a member of the LDS Church.
He is survived by nephews, Valdon Dee (Monna) Jensen, Huntington; Marlin Ross (Eva) Jensen, Clearfield; niece, Betty (Wayne) Griffin, Roosevelt; sister-in-law, Faye Johansen, Price; cousin, Red Wilson, Lawrence; with numerous other cousins, nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cleo; parents; sisters, Mary Johnson Day, Sarah Johnson, Annie Christina Johnson Langie; and brother, John S. Johnson.
A special thanks of love and appreciation is given to the home health people and the people and staff at the Emery County Nursing Home in Ferron.
Funeral services were March 4 at the Huntington LDS Stake Center. Interment, Cleveland City Cemetery under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.
Art Payton
ORANGEVILLE- Arthur Roy Payton died March 2, 2002 from complications following surgery at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center.
Born May 7, 1936 to Arthur Payton and Katherine Summe-rville in Jerome, Idaho. Married Mattie “Peggy” Crowley Nov. 9, 1955 in Salt Lake City.
Dad served his country in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1958 and fought in the Korean War.
Dad loved fishing and playing golf and had a very special way with animals. He enjoyed growing a garden and caring for it.
Dad worked at Spreckles Sugar Refinery in Woodland, Calif., for 25 years where he retired as superintendent.
Dad and Mom followed their dream and moved back home to Utah in 1987. They purchased the Sportsmans Lodge in Joe’s Valley and ran the business from 1987 to 1999.
Survived by his beloved wife Mattie “Peggy” Payton; children, Kelly Lee Payton, Dana Lynn Payton, Arthur Roy Jr. (Judith) Payton; brother, Cedar Payton; sisters, Lilly Singleton, Minnie Ross; twin sister, Joy Shropshire; grandchildren, Jacy Ranee Carter, David Arthur James Payton, Zachery Arron Payton, Danton Roy Payton, Taylor McCade Payton; eight step-grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, whom he loved dearly. Preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Gene and Buey Payton; sister, Ruth Shriver.
A gathering to celebrate dad’s life will be Tuesday, March 5, starting at 3 p.m. at mom’s and dad’s home, 15 E. Center Street, Orangeville.
Daddy, everything you said and taught us children has always helped us live the way you raised us. We love you, Daddy, and we shall continue.
Richard Behling
FERRON – Richard E. Behling, age 99, passed away March 2, 2002 in Ferron.
Born April 16, 1902 in Cammin, Germany, to Albert and Anna Barkow Behling. Married Frieda Boldt on April 10, 1928 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She passed away Aug. 28, 1982
As an active member of the LDS Church, he served in numerous callings, including missionary, bishop and high councilor.
He was a lifelong farmer and rancher.
He is survived by his children, Norman and Lora Lee Behling, Midvale; Jed and Karrie Behling, Ferron; Kay and Jerry Prout, Salt Lake City; Judy and Royce Stilson, Ferron; 18 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two daughters, June and Sonja; five brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be Friday, March 8, 1 p.m., at the Ferron LDS Stake Center, where friends may call from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Burial will be in the Ferron City Cemetery.
