The Carbon High boys basketball team went a lot farther than they did last year. Last season they placed dead last in Region 9, totally out of post season competition.
This year they made it to state but had to face a tough Dixie team on the Flyer’s home court in St. George. Unfortunately that is where their season ended with a 92-60 loss to the Washington County team.
But the score does not show the fight the kids from Carbon County put up. In fact in the first half there were times that the Flyers had to wonder if this team had been seeded wrong.
The game began with Carbon playing big and running neck and neck with the Flyers. In fact at the end of the first quarter the score showed the Dinos leading the hometown crowd by two points 16-14.
The second quarter began with the Dinos continuing to lead for a few minutes but then the Flyers started to, well, fly. Behind the scoring of Adam Christensen and Tom Whitehead the Dixie squad built up a 41-28 lead by halftime.
After the half, it seemed that Carbon just could not get back on top. In the third quarter Dixie put in 28 points while holding Carbon to 17 in the period.
The fourth quarter was no better for the Dinos. The Flyers kept cruising and out scored the Carbon kids 23-15 in the final period.
Carbon was led by Jeff Jewkes with 17 points. Matt King also contributed big time by putting in 16 in the game.
However there were many bright spots in this season. The team had an overall record of 8-13 and came away with a state playoff birth.
One of the important things about this years team was the balance they had. The leading scorer in any game could have been one of four different players, and often the ones who didn’t lead the scoring did well in that category and contributed rebounds and assists. The team defense on this team was also better than last years squad.
