Joe Leyba
SUNNYSIDE – Roman Joe Leyba, age 85, passed away Jan. 4, 2003 at his home.
He was born Sept. 22, 1917 in Canjilon, N.M. Married Susana Maestas Jan. 25, 1939 in Canjilon, N.M.
Member of the Good Shepherd Catholic Church. Longtime resident of Sunnyside, where he was a retired member of the UMWA Kaiser Steel Local 9958.
He enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting with his family. Joe loved to play the guitar and listen to Mexican music.
Survived by loving wife, Susana J. Leyba, Sunnyside; four sons and one daughter, Jake (Tonie) Leyba, East Carbon; Joe R. (Rebecca) Leyba Jr., Albuquerque, N.M.; George (Josie) Leyba, Salt Lake; Paul (Virginia) Leyba, West Valley, Mary (Wilfred) Vigil, Sunnyside; sister, Tina Trujillo; sister-in-law, Fedila Leyba, both of Clearfield; 18 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by parents; brothers, Joe, Ruben and Manuel Leyba; and sister, Senida.
Funeral Mass Wednesday, Jan. 8, 10 a.m., Good Shepherd Catholic Church. Vigil service Tuesday evening, 7 p.m., at the church in East Carbon. Family will be at the church one hour prior to services. Committal service, Valley View Cemetery, Sunnyside, under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home.
Vernon Huff
WELLINGTON – Vernon Edwin Huff, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away at home Jan. 3, 2003.
He was born Dec. 30, 1933 in Castle Gate to Manson and Mary Elizabeth Allred Huff. He married Arlene Bradley Oct. 21, 1954 in Wellington, later solemnized in the Los Angeles LDS Temple in 1967.
Vernon retired from the U.S.. Navy after 22 years, returning home to Carbon County in 1974, where he worked in the coal mines and worked for the LDS church in maintenance until his retirement.
Vern loved model trains, fishing and crossword puzzles. He loved spending time with his family in the outdoors fishing and camping and just being together. He was an active member of the LDS Church, where he served in numerous callings.
He is survived by loving wife of 48 years, Arlene of Wellington; children, Brad and Jessieann Huff of Price; Verna and Mark Thatcher of Kemmerer, Wyo.; Doris and Gordon Haws of Herington, Kan.; Mike and Michele Huff of Price; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Also survived by brothers and sisters, Darwin and Mary Huff, Jim and Arline Anderson, Norman and Collene Huff, LaVell and Annette Huff, and sister-in-law, Sue Huff. Preceded in death by parents; son, Steven and brothers, Orland, Dennis and Paul.
Vernon was deeply loved and will be dearly missed by his family and many friends he leaves behind.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, Jan. 7, 11 a.m., in the old Wellington LDS Chapel. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the church. Burial, Price City Cemetery.
