Bret Cook
PRICE – Bret Vance Cook, age 38, passed away unexpectedly Dec. 21, 2001 in Salt Lake City.
He was born Sept. 22, 1963 in Vernal to Merrill and Alonna Hemmert Cook.
Bret graduated from Carbon High School, after which he served a mission for the LDS Church in Hartford, Conn. He worked as a salesman in the Salt Lake-Bountiful area.
He loved to read and spend time in the outdoors, fishing, hunting and camping. He enjoyed good food and was a very good cook.
He is survived by his parents, Merrill and Alonna Cook, Price; children, Ian Vance, Raquel, Camille and Dallin Kimball, all of Layton; brothers and sisters, Ann Cherie Cook, Taylorsville; Dale Merrill (Shelie) Cook, West Jordan; Crista Lee (Travis) Torman, Grand Blanc, Mich.; Darren Michael (Amy) Cook, Salt Lake City; and Kathryn Jean Cook, Taylorsville. Also survived by his grandfather, Thayrel Vance Cook, Orem; and special friends, Dawn Norvell and Jane Hacking. Preceded in death by his grandparents, Lyman W. and Alta Burke Hemmert and Pearl Merrell Cook.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Dec. 27, at 11 a.m. at the Price LDS 8th Ward Chapel, located at 995 East 700 North. Friends may call Thursday from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Cliffview Cemetery in Price under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.
John Montoro
HELPER – John Montoro, age 79, passed away Dec. 21, 2001 at Parkdale Care Center in Price.
He was born April 28, 1922 in Helper to James and Rose Bonacci Montoro.
Member of the Catholic Church. John was a lifelong resident of Carbon County. Served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He will be dearly missed by his family and a community of friends.
Survived by his sisters, Anne Bonacci, Helper; and Laura Rogers, Salt Lake City; and his loving nieces, nephews and many dear cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Jane Palanza; and infant sister, Gloria.
Funeral Mass Thursday, Dec. 27, 11 a.m., St. Anthony Catholic Church. Vigil service will be Thursday, 10:30 a.m., at the church in Helper. Committal service, Mountain View Cemetery, Helper, under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home.
John W. Zupon
HELPER – John W. Zupon, age 77, passed away Dec. 22, 2001 in Price.
He was born June 8, 1924 in Rains to John and Mary Herman Zupon. Married Elizabeth Mutz June 6, 1949 in Helper.
Lifelong resident of Carbon County. Member Carbon Lodge 16 F&AM. John was a member of the Helper American Legion State Champions 1940-1941 and also played semi-pro baseball in the Utah Industrial League. Served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a petty officer first class as a Seabee attached to the 1st Marine Division in combat in the Pacific.
Manager of the Helper Pony League State Champions in 1953. As a master electrician, John owned and operated Zupon Heating and Electric and he also worked in various coal mines in the area. Retired member of the United Mine Workers of America District 22.
Survived by his wife, Beth Zupon, Helper; son, Johnnie B. Zupon, Chandler, Ariz.; daughter, Deborah Zupon, Sandy; brother, Max (Pearl) Zupon, Sun City, Ariz.; sister, Freida Dillon, Las Vegas, Nev.; grandchildren, Tyson and Trevor. Preceded in death by parents; infant daughter; and brother, Ed Zupon.
He was deeply loved and will be dearly missed by family and friends.
Graveside service Thursday, Dec. 27, 2 p.m., Mountain View Cemetery, Helper. Family will be at Mitchell Funeral Home Thursday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Helper American Legion Team, c/o Fred Martinez, Helper, Utah.
