College of Eastern Utah students Kenneth Bills and Julie Leavitt recently captured top honors at the Phi Beta Lambda National Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla.
Bills won third place in business principles. He competed against students from two-year as well as four-year colleges and universities from around the nation.
Bills represented Utah by qualifying for the event by taking first place at the state competition in Salt Lake City.
The national event tests an individual’s ability in a broad range of business functions and topics, including finance, accounting, marketing, economics, management and ethics.
Leavitt won first place in the nation in the competition for future business executive.
Competing in PBL’s national awards program, she vied for top honors against representatives from across the United States, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Guam and the Cayman Islands.
The national event consisted of three days of competition. Participant s were required to submit letters of application and job resumes, for which points were awarded.
The first day of competition involved a comprehensive test, covering areas of management and leadership, accounting, business law, marketing and economics.
A situational writing exercise was then given to each participant.
The second day was busy with preliminary interviews. Results were tallied and the top 15 contestants moved on to the final interviews on the third day.
As the first place winner, Leavitt received $500 and a trophy.
The conference is part of a competitive events program sponsored by PBL, a professional association of students pursuing business careers.
Individuals, local chapters and state teams compete in nearly 40 events representing a range of business, career and leadership development activities.
The winners of the prestigious awards are selected from PBL’s 250,000 members.
Approximately 6,000 delegates attended the 50th annual conference in Orlando.
