Attorney Sam Chiara will fill the Carbon County Board of Education vacancy created by the recent resignation of Sue Coles. The education board members selected Chiara from a pool of six applicants to represent the Westwood, south county, Miller Creek and Carbonville area. Chiara is a native of Carbon County who grew up in Helper and attended district schools. The education board appointee graduated from Carbon High School in 1988. He believes his knowledge of the local legal community will be an asset to the school board. Chiara expressed a strong belief that students in the Carbon district have access to all the benefits that are necessary to become successful in the world, but thinks that the challenge facing the district is the decline in test scores. Chiara will occupy the board seat for 17 months, at which time he intends to run for election to complete the term vacated by Coles.
