LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Objects to supplying needles for drug addicts

By Sun Advocate

Editor:
I am dismayed at the thought of a mobile unit coming to our community to distribute needles and cookers to the drug addicted of our community. I don’t believe there are too many of us that can say we have not been touched by addiction in some way, either personally or friends. Yes, I do understand the threat of Hepatitis and HIV. No, I have never seen an instance where enabling a behavior has helped anything. I find it highly improbable that someone wanting to use would think, oh wait, hey I might get sick or make someone else sick with this needle, maybe I should wait to get a clean one. Obviously their health is not a priority to them at this point in their lives.
My fears are many, firstly, why would anyone keep drug paraphernalia on their person and take the risk of getting arrested with it when they could toss it, and have a new supply anytime? Where would they drop it? Parks, alleys, street? Secondly what kind of example is this for our very young people? Do we honestly believe they won’t see this happening? Drugs can’t be that bad if they give you the supplies right?
I feel like the world has collectively lost its mind and common sense. Perhaps we should provide anyone with over 10 DUIs a smart car so when they inevitably hit someone head on it might not be such a bad accident. Maybe condoms for serial rapists so they don’t pass STDs to their victims.
Whatever happens with the issue I feel that it’s imperative that we as a community are informed and heard on issues that affect all of us. Please have a say either way and contact our council members, law enforcement and legislators on this issue.
