PRICE-The servant of God, Barbara Bavelas Kontgas, age 90, fell asleep in the Lord on Good Friday, April 14, 2017, surrounded by her family.
She was born June 26, 1926 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Speros and Magdalene Mastorakos Bavelas and raised on the family farm in Centerville, Utah. She married Tony Kontgas March 30, 1946 in Price, Utah. From the time of their marriage to 1957, Tony and Barbara owned and operated the general store at Wattis, Utah. However in 1958, she went totally blind. This did not stop her from raising her family and being involved in their lives and activities. During this time, she continued to function as though she could see. Many were the recipients of her multiple talents, including sewing and cooking. She was active in Active Re-entry, teaching others who had gone blind, how to live and function in their homes. Additionally, she went to the various elementary schools and taught the students about the life of a blind person.
During her life, she was a member of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church of Price and the Philoptochos Society.
Barbara survivors include seven children, Angelo, Salt Lake City, Utah, V. Rev. Father Luke George, Aspasia, Sam (Terri) and Deano (Shelly) all of Price, Diane (Chris) Payne, Henderson, Nevada, and Tracee, Frisco, Texas; 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Helen Bavelas, Centerville, UT; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, godchildren and friends.
Preceded in death by her husband, parents and siblings, James, Pete, Gus, Paul, Peter and Sylvia.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff of Symbii Home Health and Hospice and Pinnacle Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their comfort and skilled care to our mother.
Funeral service, Thursday, April 20, 2017, 11:00 a.m., Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, Price, Utah. Trisagion service, Wednesday evening 7:00 p.m., Mitchell Funeral Home where the family will receive friends one hour prior to services. Interment, Price City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, family suggests contributions to the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, or The Knights Templar Eye Foundation, Inc., 1033 Long Prairie Road, Suite 5, Flower Mound, Texas 75022. “May her memory be eternal.”
