The Carbon girls’ basketball team defeated the Uintah Lady Utes 68-50 at home in a non-region game.
Coming off a 35-point win over Delta on Tuesday, Carbon got off to a slow start against Uintah.
The Lady Dinos only scored 11 points in the first quarter with the team’s leading scorer Kelsey Sorenson only scoring two points.
“We didn’t come to play and we had to step it up in the second quarter,” said Carbon junior forward Jodi Noyes.
Carbon did step up in the second quarter outscoring Uintah 18-5 including a 11-3 run in the
beginning of the period sparked by Sorenson’s seven points.
“After she settled down, she got some things going and that really helped so I was pleased with that,” said Carbon Head Coach Ted Bianco.
After halftime Carbon continued to build a big lead on the Lady Utes with Sorenson leading the way with two threes’.
Sophomore guard Abbie Saccomanno also stepped up to provide scoring for Carbon in the second quarter. She made two three’s in the third quarter and finished the game with 8 points.
Coming into Thursday’s game Saccomanno was in a little bit of a slump and Bianco said after that he was proud of her performance against Uintah.
“She needed that, she is capable but she really need that bad, she has kind of been in a slump so I was pleased for her,” said Bianco.
Sorenson’s big night of scoring continued in the fourth quarter with six more point. She would go on to be the team’s leading scorer against Uintah with 21 points.
“Kelsey is a big part of our game, if it wasn’t for her we would be the same,” said Noyes.
Noyes had another big game for Carbon, especially on the boards and putting up 12 points in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
“Jodi gets a lot of her stuff off of rebounds and it helps to have her presence down there and when we get the ball inside to her she scores a lot of points too,” said Bianco.
Noyes finished the night with 19 points which includes making 9 of 13 shots from the foul line.
Uintah’s Kassidy Callahan was the leading scorer for her team after putting up 19 points against the Lady Dinos.
With the win, Carbon extends their win streak to three games heading into the Christmas break.
Bianco is happy to have an 8-3 overall record and be where they are at as a young team.
“I feel good about our team and we have done a lot of good things this year. We are young and we make mistakes but we tend to fight through those mistakes and we have gotten better because of it,” said Bianco.
The Lady Dinos will have the next week off and regroup for another non-region game on the road against North Summit on December 29.
They return home for their next Region 14 game on January 4.
