Artist George Callison stands beside ‘Pieces of Sky,’ one of his 46 oil paintings displayed in ‘Geology of Light,’ the latest exhibit at the USU Eastern Prehistoric Museum. Callison, trained in earth sciences and landscape painting, admits to being ‘a slow painter.’ It takes time to capture all the nuances light and shadow upon the landforms of the Colorado Plateau. ‘Paintings produced for the Geology of Light exhibition reflect my passion for rocks, cliffs, canyons, plains, stream courses, mesas, and mountains –all of which are produced by geological processes,’ he says ‘To me, they tell many stories –stories of deep unfathomable time, changing environments, evolving life, and human survival.’ On display beside each painting is an interpretive description of the place and meaning of the art.
