On Saturday, March 15, 2008, Carbon High School competed at the Moab Invitational Track and Field Meet.
With the Olympics just around the corner in Bejing, China 2008 will be an awesome year in the individual sports. The team sports are always in the public eye and receive plenty of publicity. The Olympics also reminds the public that there are many other activities people can compete in.
Carbon did not have all of their athletes at the meet because of the MORP that week end. A number of our athletes however did both. We were happy to see their dedication. As a result the boys surprised the competition by winning the first place team trophy.
The sprinters under Coach Telisse Allen did a great job. In the 100 meter dash Jordan Tatton placed third in the finals and second in the 200 meter finals. Ryan Rasmussen also placed fourth in the finals of the 200 meter sprint. Robert Lowe made it to the finals in the 400 meter sprint to finish in sixth place.
In the middle distance, Coach Stewart Foster had some great runs for this early season. In the 800 meter run Jared Richens placed second, Kaleb Kulow had a great run as he placed fourth with Robert Lowe a close sixth and Matt Meyer a surprising seventh place finish.
In the 1600 meter run Kent Olsen led the pack until the last 400, but hung on to finish in second place. Kent also had a strong third place finish in the 3200 meter run.
Kulow is a ninth grader at Mont Harmon Junior High School. Kaleb placed fifth in the 1600 meter run and fourth in the 800 meter run. He also placed fifth in the 3200 meter run. Andrew Bates placed fifth in the 3200 meter run.
The throwers were represented by Brock Morley, placing third in the javelin, and Brandon Watkins placing fifth.
The hurdlers had a great day under the direction of Coach Travis Hepworth. In the boys 110 meter hurdles Brett Wells placed second, Brock Morley fourth, Braden Watkins sixth and Carson Tatton eighth. In the 300 meter hurdles Brock Morley showed his heels to the rest of the field in both the trials and finals by winning both. Brett Wells placed third and Bradon Watkins fourth.
In the jumping events coached by Jimmy Jewkes, Ryan Rasmussen placed second in the high jump with Brock Morley in third place.
“The Carbon High School girls had a fantastic meet. They finished fifth as a team. This was only due to the lack of numbers. We had a lot of ninth graders that show a lot of promise this year and a lot of heart,” said Coach Foster.
Felica Olmos just came from basketball into track and placed third in both the 100 and 200 meter sprints. She also placed third in the long jump. Lydia Jeppson placed fifth in the 100 meter sprints. Karrissa Nelson made it into the finals in both the 100 meter sprints and the 100 meter hurdles and looked very promising.
In the 1600 meter run Angela Norris placed second and in the 800 meter run placed fourth. Nannie Lowe placed third in the 1600 meter run and third in the 800 meter run.
“This was the first time in this event by both girls in a high school meet,” said Foster.
In the jumping events Megan Garvin placed first in the high jump with Kristin Jewkes in fifth.
We only ran one relay. The girls placed second in the 4×100. This was their first time together. Olmos, Kristin Jewkes, Karrissa Nelson, and Lydia Jeppson made up this relay. The girls were really excited.
Our next meet will be Tuesday, March 18 at Richfield.
