The Lady Dinos found their wins as plentiful as the snow this weekend during a round robin tournament in Grand Junction. They beat Central Colorado on Thursday 54-43. Following that up on Friday with another victory, they took down Palisade 64-42. Icing on the cake came Saturday as they rounded off the sweep with a 44-33 conquest over Fruita, Colo.
On Thursday they jumped out to a 16-14 lead in the first against highly rated Central Colorado. They added to their lead every quarter for the rest of the game. The defense of Carbon forced Central’s best player to the bench with foul trouble early on. Megan Garvin found her stroke and led the scoring with 14 and a three. Samantha Smith added 11 and a three and Patricia Smith had nine. S. Smith was named player of the game for her overall effort.
The hot hand continued on Friday as they bombarded Palisade with 20 points in the first quarter. The Dino defense shut down Palisade in the second, allowing them only four total scores while the offense added 14 of their own. With a comfortable lead, the Dinos cruised a bit in the third and only added eight. But in the fourth, they really felt the magic and scored 22 points to smother Palisades for the dominant win.
Fifteen was the scoring effort by both Garvin and P. Smith. S. Smith added 11. Garvin had her long ball going and hit three. S. Smith hit a pair as well. S. Smith was again named player of the game.

Not wanting to mess with success, the Dinos repeated what they had done in each of the games over the weekend and they jumped out hard and fast. Sporting a 19-10 lead in the first quarter, they were in good shape for the rest of the game. Fruita tightened up their defense after the first and held the Dinos to only 14 in the next two quarters. Even though they outscored the Dinos over that period, they were only able to pull within seven as they headed into the fourth. In the end Carbon stepped it back up and finished off Fruita with an 11 point victory.
Patricia Smith was the Dino scoring leader with 13. Garvin ended with a respectable 11 and Erika Potts had nine to round off the scoring leaders. Garvin was player of the game in the final match-up.
“We had a goal of six wins,” stated Coach Cami Carlson. “Three for the Varsity and three for the JV. We accomplished that goal and regained some of the confidence that was shaken in our losses.” Carlson pointed out that Carbon is a team that likes to set the tempo of the games they play. When they do that, they are almost unbeatable. That was the way they played in the weekend contests and it paid off.
The team heads down to take on Cedar on Friday night and they will head further south on Saturday to meet up with Dixie. Next home game will be Dec. 18 against Uintah at 7 p.m. And then against Morgan on Thursday Dec. 20. Both of those teams are going to be superb match-ups for the Lady Dinos.
