It isn’t the season they expected. With the loss of several key players due to injuries and other issues, the Dinos are trying to regroup. They opened play at Juan Diego with a 56-38 loss. The team returned home and dropped another to Delta with a 51-31 defeat.
In each game the Dino squad started strong. Against Juan Diego they kept the score close for the first quarter of play. It was 6-7 and the buzzer sounded to end the first. The second quarter is where the game began to slip away. With a thin bench full of young players, Juan Diego took control as the starting bench rotated out for a breather.
Once in a hole, the team was unable to get back in and the deficit just kept growing. The fourth quarter of play, Carbon actually outscored Juan Diego by a point to finish the game, but the damage had already been done.
Zac Jones was the leading scorer for Carbon with nine. Dustin Pollastro chipped in eight followed by Erich Buchmiller with seven.
With little time to regroup Delta rolled into town on a snowy Friday night. The Dinos came out with some fight and looked sharp as they held their own in the first. The Rabbits had height and experience over the Dinos and by the end of the first began pulling away. The Dinos made several small runs to pull the game close, but each time Delta took charge and moved back into the lead.
The smaller Dinos could not get their inside game going and had to settle for outside shots. It was a physical game and there were a lot of turnovers as Delta grabbed and reached each time Carbon tried to drive the ball inside.
The third quarter was a defensive battle for both teams. Both only put seven points on the board. It was the fourth where the Rabbits finally put the game away. Carbon had seven players score on the night, but none were able to do any significant scoring. Jones hit eight, while Kyle Asay added six. Jones did most of his scoring from the outside with a pair of threes.
A frustrated Coach Bianco had nothing to say after the game. He is working hard to find the formula to help his team find its touch. Heading into the heart of region play, they don’t have much time to catch their breath before the next battle.
Next week they travel to North Sanpete to take on the Hawks. That game will be Wednesday night. Then back home for a Friday night match up with home town rival, Emery. That game will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Carbon High gym.
