Kenyan Koop flies to the basket for a deuce. The Golden Eagles are holding on to third place in the SWAC. |
Salt Lake Community College and CEU were tied in the SWAC standings with a chance to take sole possession of third place after the weekend match-up. Neither team gained any ground as they split the two game series. SLCC took the first game 93-79, but the following night CEU was the best with the score of 83-79.
It was the first half of play that doomed the Eagles on Friday. They let themselves get into a 17 point deficit. Even though they played better in the second half, the damage was too much to overcome.
Tyler Kepkay continued to lead the team with 30 point, while Jeremy Latham contributed 20. Kepkay was also the leading rebounder with six. Felix Casperi also pulled in five. Anthony Oliver had four steals on the night.
Keeping the momentum going from Friday night’s second half of play, CEU jumped out to take the first half lead. Nursing a slim six point lead at the break, the team held on to win by four. Kepkay hit 33 points on the night. This time he was helped out by Oliver’s 20. Casperi was a force on the boards as he pulled in nine rebounds on the night.
The split kept the third place spot in the SWAC all knotted up as CEU hosts Snow this weekend. Snow has a one game edge over CEU and if the Eagles can sweep them, they would move into second place. SLCC has to face number one ranked CSI this weekend.
Tip off for the men’s game begins at 7 p.m. both Friday and Saturday nights.
