East Carbon’s Megan Larson (23) and Donna Turner (51) put high rise shackles on Dugway’s Tiara Stevenson during a game on Friday in the Viking gymnasium.

For the first time this season it looked like East Carbon’s girls team might win a league game at home. They played hard, made a lot of shots and hung in there during the bad spots in the game.
But they still came up just short of winning, as the Lady Mustangs from Dugway took their long bus ride home with a 44-38 victory.
The game began auspiciously as the Lady Mustangs took a 15-6 lead at the end of the first period.
But in the second East Carbon came back and did it strongly. They outscored the Lady Mustangs 12-5 in the period and at the half the score was well within reach of the East Carbon kids.
As they reached the starting point of the third period, it seemed the Lady Vikings had the momentum, but time and time again they were frustrated by Dugway which stole the ball repeatedly and while the Lady Mustangs didn’t often score on the possessions they had gained, they did keep East Carbon from doings so. By the end of the period, the Lady Vikings were down 34-28.
Still hope springs eternal and it was close. But unfortunately it was so close that neither team could get a step up on the other during the fourth quarter. Both scored 10 points, while completely frustrating each other with turnovers and steals.
East Carbon was led in scoring by Samantha Madrid with 18 points. No one else had double figures but much of the team did contribute just the same.
Megan Larson and Donna Turner had 6 points each, while Amanda Hepworth had 4. Jennifer Maestas and Janet Lowe had 2 each.
The girls now face Wendover tonight (Tuesday) at 6 p.m. The team defeated the Lady Wildcats in their first meeting this year in Wendover, so this could be a key game for East Carbon.
