Sports View: Bcs Proven to Need Revamping

On Saturday night, Ute fans were very disappointed.
That seems pretty odd considering their team had just beat Big East Champion Pittsburgh in one of the four big BCS bowls, 357.
What they were disappointed in was the fact that, first, their team had no chance of winning a national championship despite a perfect 12-0 record, and two, that they had to play a team that had good talent, but didn’t even match in ability some of the teams the Utes had faced during the other 11 wins.
It’s been said time and time again, but the NCAA needs a playoff system for a national football champion in the bigs, similar to what they have in basketball, and what they have in the other college football divisions.
I am no dreamer about this whole thing. Despite being a Utah alumni, whoever wins the Orange Bowl on Tuesday night, whether it be Oklahoma or Southern California, both teams are probably better than the Utes, and in a playoff system, the Utes very well could have been totally out of it by now. But at least they would have had the chance to prove themselves.
In 1984 when BYU took home the one and only major football championship ever won in this state, the naysayers complained that BYU’s schedule was weak and that despite being the only major college undefeated team in the United States, they didn’t deserve the title. They of course never said that when other teams from the larger conferences were voted in year after year despite some questionable credentials. There was always a debate when that type of system was in vogue, but going to the BCS system only made it worse.
Now many of those same people maintain that non-BCS teams cannot possibly be the best even with an undefeated record and despite victories over a number of good BCS opponents during the season. Now that also includes one over one of their conference champions in the post season.
No one can remember when there were five undefeated major college football teams in the nation at the end of the regular season. On Saturday, Louisville took the wind out of Boise State’s undefeated sail. However, had Utah played Louisville in that bowl as they were set to do, I believe Utah’s defense would have eaten up Louisville.
As of Sunday morning then, there were four unbeaten teams left, and yet in the two biggest bowls of the year, only three unbeatens would be playing in them. I have no questions that Virginia Tech is a great team, but after all they do have two losses on the season.
Utah should have been there instead, as they proved on New Years Day night.
