College of Eastern Utah’s baseball team lost four games last weekend to Community College of Southern Idaho, losing 1-7 and 2-4 on Friday and 2-6 and 0-2 on Saturday.
“We played really good. the team is doing better, and making a lot of improvements. We just let them score too many runs,” said head Coach Scott Madsen.
CCSN pulled an early lead in game one, with three runs in the second inning. CEU’s only run for the game was in the second inning, while the Coyotes continued hitting men into home through the game, with one run in the third, two in the fourth and one in the sixth.
Southern Nevada’s Cameron Johnson, Bryce Massanari and Ryan Castellanos each had double-base hits; Shawn Olsen and Chris Siewert stole bases. CEU’s Crosby Oldham had the team’s only run, with Colton Ray batting him in. CCSN’s Michael Dunn, Massanari, Kyle Price each had runs, with Castellanos and Aaron Brady crossing the plate twice. The only fielding error was by CEU’s Preston Hansen.
CEU’s Zac Dinkins pitched five innings, allowing seven hits and six runs, committing five errors and walking four runners. Jeremy Lambson pitched innings six and seven, allowing four hits and one run, committing one error and walking two.
Ryan Tabor pitched the first five innings for CCSN, with three hits, one run, one error and four walks. Aaron Brady picked up the last two innings, allowing one hit and no runs, but walking one batter.
In game two, the Eagles looked to win after three innings with a 2-0 score over the Coyotes. But CCSN responded with two runs in the fourth to tie the game. The game remained even through the end of the seventh, and in the eighth inning, Southern Nevada brought two more runners in for a two-point win.
CEU had two runs and six hits, with runs by Colston Robinson and Adam Hutchinson. Ray and Brett Nigbur batted runners in with a double by Nigbur and a triple by Ray. The Coyotes had four runs and nine hits, with doubles by Siewert and Dunn.
The Eagles’ pitching staff started with Kyle Graham, pitching four innings and allowing four hits with two errors and three balls. Graham was pulled after the fourth inning, when a balk was called by the first-base umpire, bringing in a man on third. Riley Gordon finished the last four innings, allowing five hits, committing two errors and walking one hitter, but striking out four.
CCSN pitcher Craig Heyer started the game and pitched six innings. Hyer allowed two runs and six hits, striking out five and walking two. After the first out of the seventh, Matt Wilson replaced Heyer to finish the inning. Wilson allowed no runs nor hits, and walked three batters. Andy Primas pitched the last inning, and allowed CEU no breathing room as he allowed no runs nor hits. Two of the three batters that faced him were out on fly balls, the other on a ground out.
Game three began with two runs in the first inning by CCSN. The Eagles still had no points on the board when the Coyotes had another in the fourth. In the sixth, CEU scored one run, with another in the seventh. CCSN had three runs in the seventh, ending with a four-point win over Eastern Utah.
CEU had runs by Mitch Ramsdell and One Taumoepeau, with Ramsdell getting a double.
Southern Nevada had runs by Olsen and Jorge Esquivel, each with one run, and Siewert and Brady with two runs each.
Eastern Utah’s Hanson Perkins pitched the first five innings, allowing four hits, three runs and walking two. After two outs in the sixth, Chris Donoghue came on the mound to allow three more runs and four hits, but striking out one.
Olsen threw six innings for the Coyotes, striking out four, allowing two hits, one run, committing one error and walking one runner. Primas pitched the last inning, allowing one run, one hit and striking out one.
The final game of the weekend ended with a shutout after CCSN scored runs in the second and fifth by Siewert and Esquivel. CEU had one hit by Hansen. Double-base hits were made by Coyotes’ Olsen and Price.
Southern Nevada’s Josh Schofield pitched all seven innings against the Eagles, striking out eight, and walking none, meaning that the only man on base for CEU was when Hansen made it to first.
CEU’s Kollin Killian pitched the first six innings, allowing seven hits and two runs, committing two errors and walking three runners. Bryan Smith replace him in the seventh, and while it was too late for the Eagles to make their come back, Smith kept the Coyotes from additional points by allowing no runs nor hits and striking out one.
CEU has one more home series this season, with double-headers Friday and Saturday against Dixie State. The Eagles then hit the road for three weekends.
“If we play like we played last weekend, we have a good shot next weekend,” said Madsen. “I feel we’re a better team going into this series. I think we have pretty good chances for winning this week.
