Walking away with par on the 14th hole of Carbon Country Club golf course is nothing to sneeze at.
“Making a four there is a great score,” said head pro Tom King. “It plays like a par five.”
In fact, the 482-yard 14th hole is actually longer than the 450-yard 15th, which is a par five. However, because of the strong winds on 15, as well as a water hazard, golfers are given one more stroke on the shorter hole.
The 14th hole is rated as the second toughest hole on the course and the most difficult on the back nine. However, King said it is arguably the toughest on the course.
From the tees, the ideal first shot is a draw. With out-of-bounds left and fairway bunkers right, hooking or slicing balls are sure to find trouble.
The length of the hole will likely lead to a long second shot. For those struggling with their long irons, King recommends laying up with a middle iron and approaching with a wedge.
If the hole is being affected by afternoon winds, players are also advised to lay up.
Optimally, the shorter shot will allow golfers to position themselves for a makable putt for par.
King adds that players should favor the left side of the green, as anything right will end up in a bunker or the pond.
The two-tiered green is narrow but deep. Placing the approach shot in the wrong tier will leave players with an unpleasant putt and likely an unwanted number on their score card.
