Carbon’s Mikeleen Loveless runs just ahead of Emery’s Alexis Swasey during the region competition at Lehi last Wednesday. Carbon’s boys and girls team surprised many by placing second in the meet.

Last Wednesday the Region 8 Cross country Championships were held in Lehi and the Carbon team showed up ready to go.
Both Carbon boys and girls were supposed to finish in 4th place which meant they would not be able go to state. However, Coach Perez used his charm and physiology experience to get the teams motivated. Both the boys and girls did an excellent job and finished 2nd as a team in the meet.
In the boys event, Paul Goodrich placed a strong second behind two of the better runners in 3A division, Daniel Urry of Lehi and Bryce Carr of North Sanpete. David Goodrich placed seventh and Jacob Perez finished 10th. The top 10 individuals automatically go to state and they also received medals. Teddy Prettyman, Zach Burdick, Kent Olsen, and Tyler Munns will also represent Carbon High School as a team.
Other Carbon runners who competed at region were Jordon Burrows, Kerry Powell, Damion Miller, and Seth Wells.
The Carbon girls placed second as a team with Brittany Horrocks leading the way. Brittany placed 11th just missing finishing in the medal race. Mikaleen Loveless was 12th, followed by Paige Morley, Ashley Anderson, and Katie Hobbs. The first five girls scored points for the team. Jana Burrows, Lyn’D Anderson, and Sheena Draper rounded out the field for Carbon. The girls showed Carbon’s colors of true blue as they ran with a lot of heart and courage.
Now it’s on to the final cross-country meet, the state championships which will be held on Oct. 20 at Sugar House Park in Salt Lake.
In that race all school classifications compete together with both team championships and individual titles at stake.
