Downtown Alive – on September 11 along Main Street in Price. Live entertainment, matinee movies at the theatres, and merchants will be having specials. Prizes will be drawn throughout the day. Non-profit, civic and community groups are encouraged to have a booth on the street during this event. Booth space may be reserved at no charge by contacting Ann Evans at the Carbon Chamber of Commerce at 637-2788 or Vicki Bowman at the Foster Grandparents Program at 637-8978. Groups will need to provide their own chairs, tables, canopies, etc. Space is limited and booth space will be on a first come, first served basis.

Carbon County Recreation – will have its climbing wall available Saturday August 21^st at the Helper Arts Festival from 10am-1pm. This activity is free to the public. There will also be a climbing competition that will begin at 1pm. This activity will cost five dollars per participant and there will be prizes for winners in each division.
Entertainers Wanted – The Helper Arts Festival is looking for local entertainers to perform on the Main Street Stage on Saturday, August 21. ATV Designated Maps – are now available from Helper Police Department. Maps can be picked up at 97 South Main, Helper. Pick up between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) Education Certificate Classes – Utah State Parks and Recreation will offer the classes aimed at youth ages 8 to 16 who operate ATV’s and motorbikes. Class certification makes the child legal to drive on public lands, trails and roads. Classes are being offered at Carbon County Fairgrounds August 16th. Food Handler’s Classes – for all persons working in restaurants, bars, nursing homes, school cafeterias, convenience stores or grocery deli’s. Classes will be taught in Price on JAugust 19 at 9 a.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Southeastern Utah District Health Department, 28 South 100 East. Classes will be taught in Castle Dale on August 12 at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Health Department located at 25 West Main Street. Block C on Wood Hill – The Carbon Class of 1954 is planning it’s 50th Class Reunion on August 21. Is there anyone out there who has the pride and equipment to paint the Block “C” or “Cs” on Wood Hill? Mayor Joe Piccolo has said the City will pay for the paint, but does not have the needed equipment to accomplish the task. It would, certainly, improve the looks of Wood Hill and would mean a lot to many people, local residents and out of town visitors, let alone reflect the pride we have in our community. 2004 We the People Bookshelf – National Endowment for the Humanities has selected Helper City Library to receive the 2004 “We the People Bookshelf” consisting of 15 books. These classic books, all of which reflect the theme of “Courage”, will engage young readers as well as their parents and teachers. The library staff encourages children of all ages to visit the library and read these wonderful classics.
Volunteers Wanted – The Helper Arts Festival is looking for volunteers to join in the fun of the festival. Writers Competition – Writers of short stories and poetry, plan now to join in the 1st annual Literary Fest competition, held in conjunction with the Helper Arts Festival. Helper City Community Development Committee – All interested parties are invited to attend the Community Development Committee Meeting of Helper City every Wednesday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the meeting room at the Helper Civic Auditorium or in the Library in the Auditorium. This committee has been formed by Volunteers to acquire a new Helper City Community Pool.
Educational Opportunity Center – CEU has a new Educational Opportunity Center serving Carbon and Emery Counties. The program is designed to assist adults who would like to start into a college of their choice as well as assist students with a variety of services including financial aid application, college course selection and completing their GED if needed. The service is free and targets low income and first generation students. If you would like to start college in the fall, now is the time to get started. Free Legal Clinic – In cooperation with the Seventh District Court, Utah Legal Services is holding a Free Legal Clinic on the second and fourth Monday of each month at the Seventh District Courthouse located at 149 East 100 South in Price. Casa Volunteers Needed – Each year hundreds of children in Carbon and Emery counties become wards of the juvenile court system due to child abuse, neglect or abandonment. The child welfare system can only devote so much time and attention to each individual case and, consequently, to each individual child. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Volunteers are ordinary men and women who find it in their hearts and their schedules to help these abused and neglected children. Frontier Project – A local Family Support Group, Frontier Family F.U.T.U.R.E.S. meets every third Thursday in Carbon County. This is an organized parent education and support group. Foster Grandparents – Volunteers of America-Utah needs grandparents to join the Foster Grandparent Program team. Foster Grandparents receive a modest non-taxable stipend of about $200 per month. Individuals who are at least 60 years old; love children; have a limited income, and extra time to share may qualify. FGP volunteers serve 20 hours per week in local schools, and receive a daily meal, a yearly physical, accident and liability insurance while on duty, and transportation to and from the school. Family Support & Children’s Justice Center – offers crisis care for families with children from infants to 11 years old. Crisis nursery is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Families may use the nursery for respite, family crisis, court, doctors appointments, medical emergencies, mental health appointments, escaping family violence, attending parenting classes/divorce classes and AA/Narcotic Anonymous meetings. Star Gazing – August 20th at 8:30 p.m. or dark. Energy Loop, Huntington Canyon Scenic Byway at the Huntington Reservoir parking lot near the top of the canyon. Guest speakers will be Professor Don Burge and Professor Mark Bunnell. This event is free, bring a jacket, chair and flashlight. Binoculars or telescope helpful, but not required.
Sub 4 Santa/Historical Projects Raffle – The Clampers are raffling a 4-wheeler and other prizes to raise money for these projects. $10,000 in prizes are available. Call Scott at 472-5011 for tickets.

King Crawlers 4×4 Challenge will be held Saturday, August 14 at 10:00 a.m. south of the motocross track. Advance tickets are $7.00 for adults and $5.00 for 6-12 years olds. At the gate the charge will be $9.00 for adults and $6.00 for 6-12 years olds.
The Challenge is designed to test 4×4’s in as many off road venues as we can. For this our first year there will be three classes of 4×4’s battling it out over our mountain of rocks, the bottomless mud bog and the tug of war.
Our goal is to give the spectators a great show and the competitors a place to show off and test the skills of there 4×4’s. So if you like what deep mud, big rocks, lots of horse power, and a 4×4 can do come compete or watch the show.

Carbon County Fair Rodeo – The Rodeo will be held August 13-14 at 7:30 p.m. in conjunction with the County Fair. Jr. Barrels will begin at 6:30 p.m. each night for youth wanting to compete. Registration will begin at 6:00. A fee of $5 will be charged per participate with all the monies going into the pot for top placings. Jr. bull riding will be an added attraction to the rodeo for more information and entry contact Kyle at 637-2215 before August 6. No late entries will be accepted. Cost for the rodeo is $5.00 adults, $3.00 for Senior Citizens and 7-12 years olds and 6 and under is free. The help is free to all veterans and their families.
VFW Field Service Officer Visit – On August 12 a Field Service Officer from the VFW Department Service Office in Salt Lake City will be visiting Price to assist you in understanding and applying for rightful VA benefits, preparing and documenting application for compensation, pension, hospitalization and other benefits. This is a free service and veterans need not be members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States to qualify for assistance.
