Mike Gabriella
EAST CARBON – Michael J. Gabriella, age 93, passed away Feb. 9, 2004 at his home.
Born Jan. 17, 1911 in Marshall, Colo., to Thomas and Carmella Girado Gabriella. Married Genevieve Graskewicz July 27, 1931 in Boulder, Colo. She passed away Jun 11, 1993.
Mike moved to Dragerton in 1943 and has lived there ever since. He retired from Horse Canyon/U.S. Steel coal mine. Member of the Knights of Columbus and, in his younger days was active in the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in East Carbon. Mike, and others, organized the first Little League youth baseball organization in the East Carbon area and he remained active in the Little League organization for several years.
Survived by one daughter, Dorothy Jean Miller; four sons and wives, Donald, Mike (Alice), Tommy (Ann), Adam (Jo Ann); along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.
He is loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
Graveside service was Saturday, Feb. 14 at the Price City Cemetery under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home.
The family suggests contributions to the Make A Wish Foundation in memory of Mike.
Paul Moynier
PRICE – Paul F. Moynier Sr., age 91, passed away Feb. 15, 2004 in Price.
Born Oct. 25, 1912 in Price to Pierre Albert and Lea Blanchard Moynier. Married Mae Freeman Nov. 16, 1946 in Ely, Nev.
Paul was raised, educated and spent most of his life in Price. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II in India and China. Paul was a member of the Catholic Church, Price American Legion Post 3 and honorary life member of Price Elks Lodge 1550.
Paul worked as a stockman and farmer with Moynier and Sons, and he served many years on the water and agriculture boards in the area.
He will be dearly missed by family and many longtime neighbors.
Survived by wife, Mae Moynier, Price; son, Paul (Regena) Moynier Jr.; three grandchildren, Wendy, Barbara, Todd; five great-grandchildren; cousin, Bertha Lyons, Roseville, Calif.; and many loving nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by parents; twin brother, Pierre Jr.; brother, Leon Sr.; sisters, Madeline, Olga and Rose; and cousin his parents raised, Henry, Marius, Marie and Blanche.
At Paul’s request, there will only be a private family service. Interment, Price City Cemetery under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the CEU nursing program.
Tess Peirce
EAST CARBON – Tess Lake Johnson Peirce, age 82, returned to her Father in Heaven Feb. 11, 2004 in Price.
She was born May 25, 1921 in Reins to George W. and Avillia Hendricksen Lake.
Tess married Clell Johnson April 20, 1940 in Huntington. He was killed in a mining accident in Moab in 1963. She later married Howard Peirce March 19, 1966. He also preceded her in death.
Tess was an active member of the LDS Church.
She loved to bowl and bake, especially her wonderful peanut butter cookies.
Her children and grandchildren have beautiful quilts she lovingly made for them. She made and collected porcelain dolls and took pride in how beautiful they were.
Tess is survived by children, Ned and Janice Johnson of Diamond Valley, Dianne and Lynn Zachreson of Cedar City, Carolyn and Louis Arroyo of Salt Lake City and Kirt and Linda Johnson of Cedar City; 11 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by brothers, Berdell and Clyde Lake.
Funeral services were Monday, Feb. 16, at the East Carbon LDS Chapel. Burial, Price City Cemetery under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.
Mary Pinarelli
SPRING GLEN – Our beloved mother, nana, grandmother and great-grandmother, Mary Helen Aragone Pinarelli, age 87, passed away Feb. 4, 2004 in Sandy with her kids by her side.
She was born Dec. 1, 1916 in Shinnston, W. Va., to Tony and Maria Fratto Aragone. Her parents later moved to Columbia, where she was raised. On June 8, 1940 she married Samuel J. Pinarelli in Price, and she will be reunited with her husband who preceded her in death on April 21, 1966. She also reunites her sisters, brothers, parents and many dear friends.
Mary was an active member of the Roman Catholic Church. She served as president of the St. Anthony Altar Society, B.P.W., and the Merry-Mix Ups. Mom was honored as Woman of the Year for St. Anthony’s in 1985 and as Woman of the Year for the B.P.W. in 1997. She was a member of the Business Professional Women for 25 years. Member of Stella D’America Lodge 77, Slovenian Home of Spring Glen and the Helper American Legion Auxiliary. Mom worked most of her life for Notre Dame School Lunch Program, Carbon Country Club, Price Elks Lodge and Red Balloon.
Survived by daughter, DeAnna (Wayne) Sittre, St. George; son, Ron (Eva) Pinarelli, South Jordan; grandchildren, Mike (Cindy) Smith, Nicolle Pinarelli, Nicholas Pinarelli; two great-grandchildren; and large extended family of relatives and dear friends. Mary will be missed by all that knew her.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Mark Rada and the entire staff at Health South for their loving care given to our mother.
Funeral Mass Tuesday, Feb. 10, 10 a.m., St. Anthony Catholic Church, 5 South Main, in Helper. Vigil service Monday evening, 7 p.m., at the church in Helper. Terry Johnson
EMERY – Terry Mervin Johnson, age 75, passed away Feb. 5, 2004 in Phoenix, Ariz.
He was born Oct. 18, 1928 in Emery to Mervin Randolf and Velma Jane Maxfield Johnson. He married Gwen Watson Jan. 23, 1948 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Terry will always be remembered as being an honest, industrious man of many talents, having worked with heavy equipment as a mechanic and operator. He also worked in the coal and uranium mines, a welder, a lumberman and wood worker. He loved horses, farming, Nine Mile, Caterpillar equipment, square dancing, “buggin”, children and above all else, his family. He was also a “teacher of life”, sharing what he had learned with others. He was a retired member of operating engineers.
Terry is survived by wife, Gwen of Emery; and children, Kelly Ray Johnson, David Lee and Lynn Johnson, Ralph Terry and Julie Johnson; 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Also survived by brother, Dilworth Randolf Johnson; and sister, Dora Jane Peterson.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Feb. 11, noon, in the Emery LDS Chapel. Friends may call Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Fausett Mortuary in Castle Dale and from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. prior to services at the church. Burial, Emery Cemetery.
Ed Shaff
EAST CARBON – Edward Eugene Shaff, age 79, passed away Feb. 5, 2004 at his home.
Born Oct. 19, 1924 in Grand Junction, Colo. to William A. and Mable Stacy Shaff. Married Sherry Fern Preston March 31, 1975 in Elko, Nev.
Ed was a 60 year member of the United Mine Workers of America, Kaiser Steel Local 9958. He was very proud of his country and served honorably in the U.S. Army during Korea. Ed loved camping, fishing and his special trips to Mesquite, Nev. He will be dearly missed by family and friends.

Yoshie DiCaro
WELLINGTON – Yoshie Kogachi DiCaro, age 57, passed away suddenly Feb. 7, 2004 at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake.
Born June 10, 1946 in Kametsu, Tokunoshima, Kagoshima Ken, Japan to Hukuyoshi and Taru Shirai Kogachi. Married Benjamin DiCaro Nov. 14, 1974 in Naha, Okinawa, Japan; later divorced.
Yoshie was a longtime resident of Wellington where she owned and operated Yoshie’s Alterations. She was an excellent seamstress and her doors were open to everyone since 1981. She had a great love of music, especially for the organ and guitar. She also enjoyed cooking and loved animals. Yoshie was very proud to have earned her diploma from Carbon High School on June 2002 and she was presently attending the College of Eastern Utah. She will be dearly missed by her family, friends and many patrons.
Survived by daughters, Maria (Barushiem) Baker, West Valley City; Sophia DiCaro, Salt Lake City; grandson, Raiden Baker; three brothers, Kiyoshi, Hiroshi, Shigeshi; sisters, Sigeko and Tatsuko. She was preceded in death by parents; granddaughter, Kimiko Baker; and brother, Hukuhiro.
Funeral service Thursday, Feb. 12, 1 p.m., at Mitchell Funeral Home. Family will be at Mitchell’s Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday one hour prior to services. Interment, Price City Cemetery.
Evan Johnson
CASTLE DALE – Evan F. “Killer” Johnson, age 42, passed away at home peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Feb. 8, 2004.
He was born Feb. 16, 1961 in Price to Allen and Glenda Abel Johnson. Married Nance Wanders Feb. 22, 1986 in Castle Dale.
Evan was a loving husband, father, son and brother who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed hunting, camping and playing as much golf as he could. Evan graduated from Carbon High in 1979 and began working for Utah Department of Transportation. After working for UDOT for two years, Evan went to work mining coal for the past 22 years.
He is survived by wife, Nance Johnson; daughter, Kristie; son, Kyle, all of Castle Dale; mom, Gertrude Johnson, Kenilworth; identical twin brother, Kevin Johnson, Long Beach, Calif.; brothers, Mike (Valerie) Johnson, David (Diana) Johnson, both of Price; George (Diane) Richards, West Jordan; sister, Peggy (Ross) Christensen, Salem. Preceded in death by parents, Allen and Glenda Johnson; and sister, Rebecca DeRose.
Funeral service Thursday, Feb. 12, 10 a.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home. Family will be at Mitchell’s Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday one hour prior to service. Interment, Castle Dale Cemetery.
Junia Medina
PRICE – Junia “June” Medina, age 66, passed away Feb. 4, 2004 of a heart attack during her dialysis treatment at Castleview Hospital.
She was born Dec. 28, 1937 in Gallina, N. Mex., to Jose and Francisquita Trujillo Maestaz. June grew up in Dragerton and met the love of her life, Juan Medina, while picking cherries in Utah Valley, June and Juan Medina would have celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary on Sept. 11 of this year.
The Medina’s settled into Salt Lake City in 1960, to provide the American Dream for their children. June lived for her family, who treasured her as their matriarch. She was the light who led the whole family. Everyone went to her for love and advice. June and Juan were an inseparable team; she was his left hand and he was her right hand.
Survived by husband, Juan Medina, Price; sister, Naomi Martinez, Antonito, Colo.; brothers, Manuel Maestaz, Magna; Eloy Maestaz, East Carbon; seven children, Tom (Leticia), Veronica (Ignacio), Alfred, John (Sophia), Michele, Greg, and Denise; eight grandchildren, Raquel, Leti, Jessica, Alicia, Tori, Karley, Alexandria and Juan Antonio. They will all miss her greatly. Preceded in death by parents; and an infant brother.
Funeral services were Monday, Feb. 9 at Mitchell Funeral Home. Interment, Cliffview Cemetery, Price.
Catherine Rhinehart
PRICE/FORT COLLINS, Colorado – Catherine Margaret Lowe Rhinehart, 92, of Fort Collins, Colo., passed away Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004 at a local nursing home.
She was born April 4, 1911 in Trinidad, Colo. to Alexander Mill and Willie Winona Ramey Lowe. Married Arvil Lee Rhinehart Sept. 12, 1929 in Trinidad, Colo. He died Nov. 30, 1997.
Catherine was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Naomi Chapter 13 in Price. She was an accomplished seamstress, homemaker and enjoyed collecting hummingbirds.
Survivors include daughter, Billie Jean (Arnold John) Ackerman, Fort Collins, Colo.; granddaughter, Brenda Rhodes, Fort Collins, Colo.; grandson, Paul Ackerman, Vista, Calif.; and great-grandson, Kevin Rhodes, Fort Collins, Colo. Preceded in death by husband, Arvil; and brother, William Lowe.

Edith Bemis
ORANGEVILLE – Edith Dawn Bemis, of Orangeville, passed away Feb. 6, 2004.
Born Sept. 29, 1930 in Salt Lake City to William Chester and Aileen Beatrice Linton Cummings. She was the oldest of four girls, Doris Larson, Bonnie Thomas and Marge Ball. She has two sons, Lory and John Bemis and five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was an active, endowed member of the LDS Church. She was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by those whose lives she touched.
