Winter recreationalists cautioned to stay off Cleveland and Huntington Reservoirs.
Recently, the Utah State Parks and Recreation officials issued a warning to all outdoor winter recreationalists who intend to venture out onto the Cleveland and Huntington Reservoirs.
The ice on both of these waterways represents a serious hazard to snow machine riders, skiers and ice fishermen.
The Cleveland-Huntington Canal Company is in the process of draining down both reservoirs.
The draw down has created multiple layers of soft ice sandwiched by voids of air and/or water.
The ice pack on each reservoir must be considered extremely dangerous and highly unstable.
Any recreational use atop either reservoir is both reckless and foolish.
This hazardous condition is expected to continue into March.
To be safe, stay away from both Huntington and Cleveland reservoirs for the rest of the winter season.
When recreating on any frozen reservoir, utilize the buddy system.
Both persons should be equipped with personal ice picks, rope and some kind of floatation device to ensure tools are available.
