After finishing the preseason with an 11-3 overall record, the College of Eastern Utah men’s basketball team expected to jump ahead of the Scenic West Athletic Conference competition early on in the regular season. This did not happen the first week of the SWAC season as the Eagles dropped their first two games of the year.
The Eagles competed on the road and the journey proved to be a rough one for the eastern Utah team.
CEU kicked off the season last Thursday night as they traveled to Orem to take on the Utah Valley Community College Wolverines. The Eagles played well and applied pressure to the Wolverine team who is currently ranked 16th in the nation.
The game ended with the Eagles trailing by only two points, 67-65.
The figures were quite close across the board as the Eagles and the Wolverines both shot 65 percent from the field. The free-throw percentage was also deadlocked as the two SWAC teams each shot 37 percent from the line.
The match up was as close as it could get, unfortunately for the Eagles, the outcome was not to their advantage.
Second year Eagle, PJ Stinnett lead the team is scoring as he posted 19 points. Stinnett also pulled down four rebounds and stole two balls from the hands of UVSC players.
Anthony Grant followed in scoring with 17 points. Grant shot 3-7 from the three-point line and pulled down four rebounds.
Matt Thomas also played well against the Wolverines by scoring 10 points and shooting 2-3 from the three-point line.
The Eagles moved on to compete against the College of Southern Idaho Golden Eagles Saturday night.
The game was once again a close one as the figures were pretty much even across the board.
The CEU Eagles shot 57 percent from the field while the Idah Eagles shot 56 percent.
CSI did out do the CEU at the three-point line however as they shot 44 percent compared the eastern Utah teams 29 percent. The three-pointers hurt CEU as they fell to the Southern Idaho Eagles, 93-79.
Grant lead CEU in scoring with 24 points and Chris Langhorne followed with 15 points.
The Eagles will return home this weekend after a disappointing season start. The team will host Southern Nevada Friday evening at 8 p.m and the Dixie Rebels will visit the BDAC Saturday night to compete against the Eagles beginning at 8 p.m.
