Chelsey Timothy was the leading scorer for the ECH girls team in all the games they played this last week. |
In the past week the East Carbon girls, returning from the holidays, have faced three opponents on the basketball court.
At the beginning of last week it was hoped that “three times is the charm” would be the expression by the time Saturday night rolled around instead of “three strikes and you’re out.”
Unfortunately it was the baseball expression that ruled.
In a week that saw them travel great distances, with a beginning non-league game sandwiched in between two non-league contests, the losses mounted up. First, on Tuesday night they drove north and faced the Tabiona Tigers for the second time this season, and the Duchesne County kids won again 61-38. In the second game of the week the Lady Vikes faced West Desert in a game that should have been at home, but was moved to Trout Creek and the Lady Eagles came out on top 45-34. Finally, East Carbon faced Green River on Saturday night in the Emery County town and was defeated 50-34.
That puts the Lady Vikes at 2-9 overall and 2-3 in league play.
When the team travelled to Tabiona it wanted to avenge a 60-26 loss to the Lady Tigers on Dec. 3 on their home floor. They came closer than they did in that game, but still didn’t win.
In the first quarter the Lady Vikes fell behind badly, a move that cost them for the rest of the game. At the end of the first period the score was 13-3. The second period was not much better as the Duchesne County five went into half time with a 32-14 lead.
In the second half East Carbon came out playing much better defense as they held Tabiona to 10 points in the third period. Unfortunately they couldn’t make up any ground by only scoring 10 themselves. The fourth period was another victory for the Lady Tigers who outscored the ECH kids 19-14.
The high scorer for East Carbon was Chelsey Timothy with 23 points. Misty Valdez contributed eight.
On Thursday the team took the trip to Trout Creek. West Desert jumped off to a big lead and never let go. At the end of the first period the score was 11-2. In the second period neither team could score much and it ended up with both squads only scoring six points each for a Lady Eagles 17-8 half time lead.
Again West Desert zapped the Lady Vikes in the third period 21-12. But in the fourth the ECH kids made a come back of sorts, outscoring the West Desert girls 14-7.
Timothy was again the leading scorer for the Lady Vikes with 16 points. Joyce Clark put in six.
Saturday night the pattern continued as the Lady Pirates jumped out to a first quarter lead that they never gave up. At the end of the first quarter it was 9-4 for the Green River girls and by the half they led 23-10.
East Carbon did have another strong third quarter, something they seem to do in every game. They scored 14 points to the Lady Pirates 13, but there wasn’t enough momentum to catch up as they let the fourth period slip away 14-10.
Again Timothy led ECH scorers with 14 points. Brittnie Leonard and Samantha Madrid scored eight each.
The girls face a busy time again this week too. Tonight (Tuesday) they play at Wasatch Academy and then on Thursday they travel for a game with Dugway. Their next home game will be on Jan. 21 when they play Dugway at 6 p.m.
